my baby's getting loud enough to make my ears hurt, so I got my some musician's earbuds.. These things are like regular earbuds but don't "muffle" the sound. Instead they just lower the volume accross the board, resulting in a low amplitude, intelligible sound. So I got my baby screaming in my ear, and still be able to carry on a conversation with the earbuds. I can easily see these things being very useful for a loud bar. NY bars are just insanely loud, I can't see why anyone would go there but to get their ears blown off.

I got the cheap ones fro Etymotics and they work quite well. cheers to saving hearing!

I love my V-Moda earbuds. They sound great and don't leak to the microphone. New Yorkers don't care about health. I warned you not to move there.

i've had mine 15+ years now - Elacin ER-15s which are moulded to my ear canal, which means airtight fit. They cut volume by 15dBs and attempt to do it as flatly as possible. i can only imagine how much hearing i've saved given the volume of most gigs i go. £150 but easily worth it.

i always find it amazing that when i tell people who might be interested the cost they go, "Oh" and forget it, but will happily spend £200+ on a pair of glasses because it says Dolce & Gabbana on the side.

A Danish company made three attempts to mould ear plugs for me. But in the end, they gave up. My ear canal is very straight, so the plugs don't hook as well. The result was, that if I smiled, there would come a free passage for the full sound. So I had the choice between good sound and having fun.

Anyway, many live engineers are so treble deaf, that "carpenter's earplugs" with their high treble attenuation are actually not that bad. And by time, the brain becomes quite fast at adapting. So I use those for louder stuff and some "christmas tree" like plugs for less brutal volumes.

for stage, playing at reasonable volumes helps....

At NAMM one company (can't remember who now) had a line of people getting their ears molded. Funny scene.

i am the other way - i have an unusually bendy ear canal so i have to curve them in and out. You could of course not smile which reduces wrinkles .
