Any public statement from MS is going to state their IP/EULA policies (upgrades are only legal with a compatible license under your ownership already.)

well then, no one has really violated the terms of the agreement.

is this world for people or disembodied human created entities? i can't see m$ actually trying to push the point beyond the whining that they're doing. they're just trying to bully people, to get less resistance from people for future impositions of sovereignty. the eula is their POLICY. it is not law unless people truly BELIEVE that such an entity could have any authority over it's master. copywrite is the only true ownership that m$ can claim(though a crooked court will allow anything). DECENCY requires that the eula be complied with, within reason as the basic tenet that an os is licensed for one machine is reasonable, if agreed upon by both parties. people depend on an organization like m$ to ORGANIZE something as complex as an operating system, and paying the company for the product makes that reasonably possible. when the product that you pay for is not delivered as promised, then the company is the one who needs to fix things. if it doesn't, the eula doesn't really apply. if the product is just not delivered, the customer has the right to have that remedied and m$ really can't complain, especially if they aren't being penalized.

this is one heck of a non-story. a truly independant press wouldn't even bother to mouthpiece for m$ by even reporting that m$ was unhappy. m$ is incredibly arrogant to think that they can take people's money and not give a useable product in return. get out the horsewhips...

i'm sure it will all work out fine....

Agree. Win7 installed here without a check and activated. Of course WGA & Activation are still present so it's not devoid of draconian measures. But the responsibility for making sure I have other licenses is mine, not the software's and it seems that MS agrees. Non-issue...

While parts of Microsoft are making threats they won't do anything because they already have a public image problem. That is why they were selling advanced copies for $50 and $30 USD. They never prosecuted any of the millions of illegal XP owners. The flaw was probably intentional.

Incidentally, Ballmer recently stated that MS was aware that their licensing (across OEM/consumer & VLK systems) is too complicated and contains too much fine print, but has no plans to change it at the risk of angering shareholders — and even customers who benefit from the confusion. "I'm sure we have fine print we don't need. We're not saints," he said, adding that customers have a way of figuring out how to pay the least amount of cash possible to use Microsoft's software. "Customers always find an approach which pays us less money.""

I read that to say that they like their profits but also know there are loopholes, and know how closing them would affect their marketshare (pushing people off of windows isn't what they have in mind imo.)

Paul Thurrott benefits from at last not being called a Microsoft ass kisser.

the Ballmer quote puts it in a nutshell....

but they dream of, and plan for the day when people's opinions won't matter or can be even more easily managed, like when they get the first human running on a windows os...

Actually this is intended for students only. Microsoft wants you to pay Your Price:$188.99 for the full version so, no they are not paying me.

I just did the activation and it worked without having to edit the registry. Some people can do it this way.

So far so good. The memory dumps are taking longer but the convolution reverb in the piano now works. Further testing is needed. I was 90% happy with RC2 which is the best rating I could give any Microsoft OS to date.

Where's the headlines for the bit where Apple says you need to own Leo to use their $20 Snow Leopard upgrade (which can be clean installed as well)?

I was happy with Vista on my system. Things always get a little better. I heard Snow Leopard wasn't that great.
