It looks like there may finally be a relatively simple fix for the crash problems Xite-1 has had running on a Gigabyte X58 based motherboard. A new (beta) BIOS has been released by Gigabyte, that seems to have fixed the problem on my machine. Your mileage may vary of course, but my Xite-1 went from collecting dust on the shelf because it made my computer too unstable to use, to back in action.

I've been testing it mostly with the sampler, which would instantly crash - I even ran it all night with a heavy MIDI stream plus Prime95 in the background, so all processor cores were running at 100%, and it ran until morning without crash or errors.

Given the past bad performance with the Gigabyte X58, I'm not quite ready to pronounce it "fixed." But I'll continue to stress test it and post here if I've run into new problems. If I have had no further problems after a week or so, I'll post that.

Definately X58 guys will love this news, I am happy for you JD.
It is such a powerful system w/ a fast 920, or even better a 975.
I have a few friends who love their X58's but do not use them for audio.
You know GaryB is always right....I mean it 100% right when it comes to Scope DAW's.
I spoke with him about the other X58 that was driving the owner nuts w/ his XITE-1.
He said, it's probably just an update to the BIOS for the PCI-e slots, etc. that will fix things.
I always get excited w/ new tech and mobo's, but GB always talks me into proven technology.
Well 5 years w/ zero crashes is living proof.

Anyway, I am extremely happy for you and hope to see you doing projects and sharing tips.

Well, there seems to be a new bios for my EP43-DS too!

Maybe it'll solve the RAM problem I've been having.

Did you have any more problems with the Gigabyte X58 since you installed the BIOS update, John? I'm on the verge of buying one but I'll hold off if there are still problems.

No problems. I was waiting for the non-beta BIOS to come out before I posted. It has been really stable, though, so I don't think you will have a problem. It's a great MB for wc and oc.

They're rackmounted too for those Guinnea Pigs.
Having this ridiculous speed is very tempting, but with our soundcards already encased in 1U cases I am paranoid about leaks from movement.
But their forums seem to be full of happy campers as well as and trigger happy Fanboys...

3KW of water cooling!!! Is that for a nuclear processor?

I've always been nervous of water cooling i.e. leaks. I'd be only interested for making the computer quieter. Specially selected fans can do the same job.

There is a new BIOS for this MB, F9P. Still labeled Beta. I installed it and it works fine with both Xite- and PCI cards, both running at once.

I learned my lesson about Taiwanese mobo's.
New tech is great but the first fix came out after 6 months, and now 1 year later they got it dialed in...
I remember when everyone was complaining about the XITE-1 and my ancient P35 seemed just fine.
I really want to upgrade, but I want a 1U, which means the H57 chipset and that will be shown here in Vegas in 3 weeks at CES.
So I guess I won't be totally mobile until 2011....
The AMD is a great way for right now, the 785G is a super chipset, and the graphics leaves Intels in the dust, but sadly their CPU's dissapate heat at an alarming rate in a towe case, in a 1U I would be asking for trouble.
