Computer Freezes - What to do? experience of this?

Hi!

Is there anyone with experience of this problem? Please help, this will be a really disaster during future recording.

Last week I was reinstalled my music computer. All programs and hardware seems to work just fine, besides some very
unpleasant freezes of the system. It has happened a few times in the sesequencer and outside surfing the web. The strange thing is that it totally freezes and no commando like "ctrl + alt +del" won´t work.

After I shut my computer off using the on/off button and turn it on again there is no dialogboxes or messages, al works fine again.

---
My set up is:

PC
Win XP sp3
Luna II Creamware (3 DSP/Home SONIC CORE PLATFORM) Scope 4.0
Cubase 4.5.2
---

Regards

Johan

go to start/programs/accessories/system tools/system information/hardware resources/conflicts-sharing and tell me what, if anything, is sharing an irq with the Scope card.

Had the same issue with scope 4.5 and a dualcore machine under win xp sp2 acpi mode. it seems to me to be a driver problem considering the acpi mode is which indispensable when using dualcore or hyperthreaded cpu systems. i solved my problems with exchanging the driver from driver of scope 4.5 to the driver that belongs to scope 3.1b.
since then no freezing at all and my system works perfectly.
try it and report. good luck!

Ok.

Here is a screenshot of the IRQ-ports. This is out of my knowledge, is it possible to fix the freeze-problem somehow whitout installing old drivers for scope-platform?

btw, i have a dual core processor.

Thanks for your fast reply

disable the two usb controllers on irq 23(numbers 2830 and 2836) in the device manager.

done!

Garyb, is the freezing a generally error when "devices" share irq-ports?

I guess its just to wait now, and see if the problem is gone.

Thank you very much.

change the driver, it´s no problem at all. if it doesn´t work out it´s no problem to go back to 4.0s driver.

or check out scope 5. this definately will solve your problem.

and remember: make system backup before experimenting with your system.

Scope can't share an irq.
if Scope, being a realtime app, can't access the system when it needs to because say, usb is hogging the line, then you get a freeze.

there's one other thing that will always cause a freeze. let's see if the problem is solved first, though....

The Problem is unfortunately not solved. The Freeze happend again today for a moment ago. I did not do anything particulary, just some artwork in Photoshop, no other app running, besides Scope software in background as default startup.

garyb or someone else, is there anything else to do?

Please help, this is crazy loosi´n work when it freezes and I have to turn off the computer on the Off-button.

A system freeze like you are describing might occure due to heat. http://www.cpuid.com/download/pcwizard/pcw2009_v190.exe is a good tool for hardware monitoring. if you are using a standard boxed cooler for your dual core processor, chances are that one or two of the fixing pins have "popped out".

So basically, the first thing i would check is that the cooler(s) are properly mounted. as you said this also is triggered by photoshop, i suggest you launch photoshop in windowed mode and keep the monitor open beside it. follow the temperatures, especially CPU temperature and mothernoard temp as you launch some heavy photoshop processing.

More tips that worked for me.

1 Change the pci slot.
2 Disable write combing for your gfx card.( its in the gfx tab under system prefs)

One very important thing that solved my freezes was a midi filter, where I disabled ACTIVE SENSING.

You got the freezes when Scope is running? Or without any DAW running?

Greetings; The advice in the previous post worked for me when i was getting seemingly random freezes on a system built on an Intel 945G chipset.

If i recall right, i had the S-C midi filter placed right after the module representing the S-C cards midi input. As stated, active sensing has to be filtered out, but i think i also filtered out a bunch of other stuff too (eg sysex).

I solve freeze problem with v.5 RC, when i was on 4.5 i try all tricks posted in this forum, but i only minimize the probabily of the freeze. No one freeze now with v.5 RC, if you can survive to other minor bugs try v.5

can't see any minor bugs and i can say that after 3 new tracks/projects created, working whole day with it,
very stable....

Hi everyone, follow this exciting "cold" thread.

Just want to update you how it goes.
Thanks everyone for tips and advices, unfortunately i still ha some random freezes.

---
Tips:
1. The midi filter, filtering out active sensing. did not help I think, I got some freezes afterwards.

2. Hyperthreading - dual core. The dual processor interaction with the Hardware/software?
thomas wrote to me:
"HT is 1 of;
most SW isnt written for more than 1 cpu be it physical or virtuell;
probl. is only within cpu spikes;
there you are with the next probl.;
with normal tools you are NOT able to see this spikes;
for exampl. taskmanager in xp asks about 500ms cpuload;
you wont see spikes within this time!"
---

So, for your information. I have used my Luna 2 Card with earlier drivers, for Win 98 and even Win Xp, With this computer with dual core with no freezes.

So, the only thing thats new, is scope 4.0 drivers and software.

In this moment i have, As I can see, THREE things I could do for getting on with my musikproduction and recording.

1. Try to find XP drivers and earlyer drivers for the LUNA 2 card, I dont have them any more, and I cant find them on SonicCore website. I remember a basig software windom with a mixer and no plugins, I only used the input/outputs for audio and midi.

2. Buy scope 5.0 and hope it will run stable.

3. Buy a new card for the same money, for example:

keep warm!

Eheh you are lucky ;) anyway i found many bugs in v.5 RC but i report in other post (and soniccore staff) if you just curious can search in this forum. Now in my workflow with scope i prefer minor bug but system stability.

well, i know that there could be bugs,
in my experiences, i was using version 4.5 before and with the same project under version 5.0 works fine,
ofcourse i didn't try everything, but what i need works perfectly,
if i'll digg deeper into scope 5 i'm sure something will show up :)

cheers,
