Perhaps they mistook the outcry for supporting "Apple's Latest OS" for the iPhone OS?

actually it was a bit hard to make a proper shoot at lamplight - I'll replace it with a better one...
The phone is running Jaadu RDP, surprisingly easy to handle a 1600x1200 screen.
I even could do some routing... :D

Apple has done an amazing job on the GUI, and they score a full 10 regarding the store for 3rd party apps (imho).
The funny thing is they offer stuff following the 'braincell paradigma' (...if I may say so...), but he's probably their biggest hater. :D

cheers, Tom

ooops: a virtual beer and a cigar for everyone - my post #6666 :o

I never see you down here much, but this is an incredible bit of information.
You can actually route..?
You should change the Dynamic Mixer's name to say Astroman 16 or something....

The biggest haters of all are Apple enthusiasts. I support Android because Iphone is a walled garden. No surprise here since Apple knows what is best for customers haha. They recently banned an app because it had topless women. That is reason enough to boycott them if you ask me. It is a fad. It will be overtaken by Android. Mark my word.

Cheers Tom (virtual puff, virtual slurp, virtual ahhhhh)

Actually I've been following the iPhone/iPod Touch development for a while, and I really like the way they're going. I was first interested in the possibility to create a mini-remote controller for MIDI using Usine, but after trying out some other music apps they have, I can see a lot more interesting possibilities!

Too bad the iPhone is waaaay too expensive in Portugal (due to the greedy phone companies), but the iPod Touch is more sensibly priced, and has the advantage of not receiving phone calls in the middle of a gig. My cell phone is the dumbest I could find - no camera, no games, no bluetooth, no internet browsing... Just a phone and an alarm clock!

BTW, since we're talking about phones, have you seen the Pomegranate?

I'm a bit clueless in the iPhone world...are you actually controlling scope through the iPhone? Quite amazing if so!

Gary, you still can't have my beer, man. I'll get one for your own...

He's using an iPhone based Remote Desktop client (RDP).

And imo Google's Android is less a walled garden and more like a Labyrinth Garden right now. I have hopes for it as I want to be able to keep some background apps going and Apple has again skipped that functionality this year (since you apparently aren't supposed to use the iPhone outdoors on a warm sunny day perhaps it was a good idea.)

Pomegranite seems a must-have for upwardly mobile 'strictly business but I still wear heels' types. :P

The iPhone is currently the most fun but I wouldn't ever get one because the battery life is so low. Imagine how bad it will be when it gets old.

righty, right Valis - just a simple client app handling the XP desktop, nothing Scope specific.
Yet I found it pretty amazing that it was usable at all and fairly easy to setup.
I have that phone for a couple of days only and it needs practice for sure... all that tiny, fiddly stuff
Probably (one of) the best opportunities is the Jasuto modular thingy that looks like a reactable descendent. :D

Anyway, I still have that 19" guitar-FX processor based on a Pulsar One on my mind...
A midi controller could do nearly all of the standard control, but one might need access to the screen occasionally, which the wifi connected phone would provide just fine.

I have no idea about other smartphone OSes at all, but if the user interface of the iPhone wouldn't be an original Apple developement they wouldn't be mentioned in the first place constantly.
They set the yardstick for commercial downloads with the itunes store and they do it again with the app store for their cellphone. As usual the pack is following...

It's not any point at all if something is better or more powerful or more open or more dunnowhat
In Apple's store it's merchendability and that counts for the developer
For the customer it's easy and convenient - and they even don't censor demolishing comments.
It's perfectly ok with me to exclude stuff rated x, more than enough places to find that on the net
Btw my first download from the store was Alfonso's and Guiseppe's Experience of Space - simply love it

cheers, Tom

yes, it does eat batteries for breakfast and it won't wait until dinner...
that battery powered battery-charger (from the hijack thread) isn't a joke at all for an iPhone :o :D

My point really wasn't that you should have soft core porn apps but that Apple is being exactly like AOL was when they would not let customers connect to the internet. Domination over customers has been the Apple philosophy from day one and is the reason most people aren't using an Apple computer today. As you recall, they were ahead when they introduced the first very popular home computer. You are right that this is all a game though. It might not matter to you but it matters to them and it's interesting and a hot topic to many people. I'm sure cell phones will be better because of Apple.

I have to agree with Astroman here. From a developers point of view, especially compared to anything that came before the iPhone, the iPhone and appstore is heaven. It's easy to set up, it's cheap to get started (100$), you get 70% of the saleprice and theres already millions of potential users. Beyond that, you have a pretty powerful machine with a "unique" multitouch interface and gyro, ready to be used in new and exciting ways.
There is nothing out there that comes close to hitting all these nails right in the same way - It's as simple as that. They made it easy for the developers to produce content for their platform, they made it easy to make it available to the customers and they made it easy for the customers to get it.

I never were an appleman before, but the iPhone has shown everybody else the path of the future, and here we are years after the first release of an iPhone and the competition is still hopelessly lagging behind in the dusttrail. Which is quite amazing when you think of it. How hard can it be? How hard can it be to produce a great device/platform/appstore when somebody else already has shown you how to do it right? and yet noone else has been able to do it yet.

The iPhone may be overrun in the future, but man, what an entrance on the smartphone scene!

Last, yes the battery life sucks - but the way I use it, I charge it every or every other night (when I sleep) that's it - its not ideal, but it works - the battery doesn't show any sign of degrading after almost one year of use - I've learned to live with it :)

Funnily enough I don't even have a cel phone right now, it's been a few years since I broke that tether and since I don't gig much right now it doesn't cost me anything aside from my local friends being unable to text me. So it's a bit harder to convince me to buy into the game again, though with the way my local market for work has changed in the last 6-9 months its likely I'll have to bit that bullet and flex the budget to fit again.

I had high hopes for Android but it's a very scattered market right now. Having a dev model would have been ideal for me (just compile the apps I really want if they're not already there: scp, sftp & bitchx and run them in console/terminal/bash) but alas the dev models have a lot of restrictions when it comes to using commercial Android apps (Android dev's need to have 2 phones?).

iPhone 3GS lacks background apps (the cpu was underclocked presumably due to all the other circuitry surrounding it) but I'll agree it's still the most tempting of the bunch, especially for a musician with the abundance of musical apps that tie neatly into the touch interface.
siriusbliss wrote:My new Palm Pre dances circles around the i-phony
Alas, the latest iTunes yanks the Palm Pre's ability to masquerade as an iPod (for those who cared about that). Another game of round robin there, though I'm not sure why Palm doesn't just collaborate with a 3rd party app like Songbird.

I like the pomegranate, Tau. The inclusion of a gob-iron is cutting edge & funky fresh :)

Glad you liked it Wayne! :)

What sold it to me was the "harmonica" function. Way better than any musical app, it's a musical instrument!

Looks like 4.x to me :)
I have remote desktop to my scope PC to do some tedious scope editing of graphics from work, but i cant play midi to it and hear anything back, it might be possible to setup a streaming winamp station for the audio though.

:D

- "gob-iron" or "brass sandwich" are colloquial for harmonica down here ;)

Next upgrade would be a micro air compresser for analog ringtones :)
