the new V5 compressor

is my opinion, or the new SC-C compressor works like charm?
it has only two knobs, but using it i was able to obtain a great vocal track.
previously, i used the D-COMP compressor, but i feel that this one is even better.
any opinion on this?

It is very good.
I use it for taming down and actually limiting the swelling of my drawbars live, and it works perfect for that. I wish it didn't add the extra high end to my bright percussion settings, but I believe that to be a combination of the reverb and the compressor. Hardly a showstopper though.
I have to drop my pre send levels to get it to work the way I like as it is a monster on the gain, but it doesn't color the sound.
For real precise stuff I would still use the Comp AI from DAS. It's an impressive plug when I mix drum tracks w/ Bass and vocals, and the Side Chaining is supertweakable when combined with the DAS Key Levelled Gate.

i must aggree
I`ve tried it also and love it.
it does quite well maximize amplitudes, and more heavy compression than vinco.
its something inbetween loudness maximizer, spl compressor and vintage comp.
and to be fair it only has one parameter, the other is the input gain. lol
awesome results without big tweaking.

The new V5 compressor is a leveling amplifier - build for ease of use.
And it seems you've found out where it can be useful.
I am glad you like it!

mmmh, the main atom developer himself Mr. Piehl.
its a stunning "FREE" gift, that easily beats expensive plug-.in stuff in its function.
it does not only work fine with solo channel strips but also as a master compressor.
has all my thumbs

what is the difference between a comp and a leveling amp??
thanks

obviously the name.

It's such a small module they couldn't fit the name on it.
I thought perhaps the SC GC might be a new Gated Levelling device so I went checked it to make sure......................ankyu.

I like it, too

Love it too. I thought levelling amp vs. compression is more difference than just the name... Isn't it just the other way round working internally? My Vlim works just the other way round than a compressor. Instead of lowering high input and then amplifying whole signal it looks, which signals can be amplified to reach max level. Vlim has a unique algorithm for that purpose, but I developed it just before the time I cut down my time invested into developing devices for making more music.
I opened it just a few days ago and ... yes again, tasted some blood... maybe I will find some time in the next 7 weeks to develope it further.

doesn't a leveling amp work more as a limiter, on Peak detection and a compressor works on RMS detection?

no doubts on that one

Honestly I had doubts, as I usually do avoid thinking in categories and names, so most things can be questioned from one to the next minute in my head. Where is the compression-algorithm-strategie-thread in the developement forum

?!
Could it be, that what I was talking about is a special kind of a mastering-limiter?

Hi all,
As I understand it, there isn't really a difference, as such. Even the definition between a compressor and a limiter is blurry, as some people consider a compressor with a ratio >8:1 a limiter, and some just consider it heavy compression. Others reckon it's more like 10:1, but there's no hard and fast rule that I'm aware of!
Also, levelling (and limiting) amplifiers are basically 'old' terms for compressors - the 1176 is called a 'levelling amplifier', which some understand means that it has a fixed threshold - however (and this is the case with the 1176 and many other compressors, apparently including the v5 compressor), the fact that you can adjust the input gain amounts to much the same thing as adjusting the threshold in any other compressor: you're just changing the level of the programme material relative to the threshold, rather than changing the threshold relative to the programme material.
Correct me if I'm wrong!

I find the Gate is really good too.
One thing I notice about these plugs is while I always listen to see if I detect coloring I do notice the more effect you use the combined sounds seem to drop down in fidelity, but that's at higher amounts. These plugs work really well when used cautiously.
Is it possible that because of our realtime benefit that the results in fidelity are dropped down instead of up?
I don't know very much but I do trust my ears. I do notice a difference in 16bit libraries being converted to 24bit libraries as in going from Gigastudio 160 2.54 to Gigastudio 3 Orchestra.
I seem to hear a trickling down when these effects are used at higher levels.
One of the main reasons I don't listen to music on the radio is becuase it sounds all mushed together, the vocals are always higher in the mix than the original recording, etc.
I guess I have seen too many live concerts and live performances and enjoy the sound of realitic instruments better, but who knows, maybe the FOH was using a hardware compressor at very low levels.........

use too much compression(any compressor/limiter) and you end up with a square wave(serious distortion of the wave form), so yeah, extreme settings will suffer from a loss of fidelity...
radio uses a brickwall limiter set very aggressively, both to keep the transmission efficient and to allow poor quality playback devices like small radios to be able to play without the dynamics shredding the speaker.

Well then using a Limiter w/ a soft knee is better then using a Compressor with a higher ratio for limiting, becuase it would retain the original waveform better..?

that's the idea.
it all comes down to what sounds the best and yet still allows the playback device to operate efficiently...
