I've been through 3 or 4 big ones in LA.
Not fun 'cause you don't see them coming.

not trying to be funny.
Just have to be prepared - like keep big speakers off shelves, etc.

We have had at least about 60 of them through this 2009... 4 of them where pretty strong, and one in paricular, which epicenter was in Argentina, was really strong, I was recording a song for Mojo Demo called Full Void, it was at about 4 in the morning if I remember well... My screen moved really hard from left to write, I thought the plastic base would brake :o

we had one here in bangladesh (scale 5.5)... its scary.. not possible to run out of the house. it took me 5sec to understand the whole building is shaking....i have to move but it all got stuck...frozen. :lol

the underworld is moving every second. this is scary stuff :lol

5.5 is a baby.
the one we had the other day was around that size, it knocked over two precarious things(a tall, narrow vase up high and a metal sculpture with a very small base), shook the house and was gone(my wife took off like a shot, though  ).

it really gets interesting about 6.5-7. then, structures start fallling and the earth can even open up if you're lucky...

At 6.+ stuff starts falling out of cupboards and refrigerators open up and dump everything out onto the floor.
Foundations crack. Buildings and bridges collapse.

Not fun.
