I think the instruments they are talking about aren't musical even though they have analog & digital I/O's.

Bittware is another supplier if you're interested in doing your own stuff

the only tiny disadvantge is a slightly increased developement time, but then you're free to code whatever you like...
Depending on personal skills expect anything from a factor of 5 to 50 more time than with Scope SDK.
