anyone got a script to send millions of emails to ntltelecomlimited@live.com

actually just keep typing ntltelecomlimited@live.com so spambots can find it more easy. type ntltelecomlimited@live.com everywhere you can on the web.

So it was you atOm, you scoundrel!!! I was meant to be getting married to one of those lonesome Russian lassies looking for a man a week on Tuesday, but she hasn't been in touch since I sent her the cost of plane ticket in November.

I think the best way to check if a potential signup is a bot or not, is to ask for:
1. At the same amplitude, which frequency will be perceived as loudest?
a. 20hz b. 3000hz c. 30khz
2. Which is most likely to benefit from a 32bit recording?
a. auto pan b. stereo enhancer c. reverb
3. When a sin wave of 30hz and 32hz is summed, what is the frequency of the beating?
a. 31hz b. 2hz c. 62hz
4. For equation: 0.2 + 0.8 * sin( 0.3 * pi ), the amplitude is:
a. 0.2 b. 0.8 c. pi

challenge question: What is the power ratio of a 3db boost?

Actually, let's do that over, maybe some of that was a little technical.
1. A signal is going from Access Virus -> 4ch mixer -> Preamp. Where would you try to achieve maximum volume?
a. Access Virus b. 4ch mixer c. Preamp
2. DCF stands for
a. Diagonal Contour Frequency b. Digital Controlled Filter c. DAC Channel Failsafe
3. You turn a knob to change a kick drum's pitch mod. The kick drum most likely uses:
a. analogue modeling b. multisamples c. AWM2

Well... okay, maybe some of these questions might take a bit of googling for some people... not to sound conceited, it did take me a while to learn some of the things. But anyway, a short questionaire that would take a musician's knowledge to answer, or to find, may be useful to block against bots and... well, people who have no relevance to this site in the first place.

sure. But if that guy is smart -and spammers are usually very resourceful- his bot uses proxies to get to the @live.com inbox and send automated mails. If that is the case, the only thing that will happen is hotmail deleting the inbox (and black listing the proxy) and then he uses another one

Spam is not about to stop. The thing that is remarkable though is how they can get through phpbb3 captchas :o
OCR?. These guys sure mean it when they decide to go for a spamming campain

edit: oh wow, it's even better than that: they found a way to get the captcha on a porn website where the user has to decrypt it in order to have a lady strip her clothes off

ain't that clever enough?

John, if you want to get rid of spammers and be relatively free of that maintenance, just take a little time to edit the phpbb code of planetz and block any new subscription that includes an address from major web emails providers like @live, @hotmail, @yahoo, @gmail...

If he was smart would he be spamming on forums? i haven't found a forum yet which welcomes it.
i mean why bother trying to break catchpa so you can post where you are not wanted?

Neutron,
spam works as a form of cheap publicity. Of course they are not welcome on forums but some forum members WILL eventually be interested in whatever it is they advertise. I think as long as this will remain true, we will be seeing spam.

John,
if you're into trading off user ease of subscription for a more spam free planetz, edit functions_users.php and look at the code below line 1586 that starts with

function validate_email($email, $allowed_email = false)

you can then filter off web email domains easily

or just give a handful of trusted regulars such as permission to delete peoples accounts (only for the reason of spam) if John is not around to do it.

and/ or or use a math catchpa, which says something like 3 x 5 in one box and + 15 in another and you type in the answer.
or an animated gif which cycles quickly, but has one letter on each frame, the bot will only look at the first frame.

Gordon, your suggestion will block out real users.

I like having a few moderators as Neutron already suggested. A Much better way to solve this issue.

John, if you need help with any PHP coding/feature adding etc. I'm well qualified, work for free and have references from another popular forum.

(Neutron, I like that animated graphical number idea)

hey there is of course a trade off and I mentioned it. one could argue that audio engineers and musicians are quite technical and that the percentage of them not having access to ISPs email accounts is very small.. but it's still a trade off. and a very good second line of defense :) . I too like Neutron's suggestions but to me, trust is expensive; the other ones involve much more programming than the 10 lines of code required to filter out new users that come in here to subscribe with a web based email address

anyways, the frequency of our favorite spammers appearence here is quite low, so it was just me thinking outloud. please carry on

I should have said "like me" :P My main email address is @gmail. Imho there's gotta be something else other than domain blocking that'll do the trick.

Of course, I personally would be grandfathered in, but - think of the children!

User/spam deleted, but i left this topic here for the discussion...

Gordon, I don't agree with domain blocking. Especially gmail/etc, most people use it now!

I've tried a number of things over the years. The bot coders always evolve along with the challenges.

Captcha is essentially useless.

I added a new required response 6 months ago, that totally eliminated spam for about 5 months :) They've adapted.

Time to change again. Ken has some awesome suggestions there, but it might weed out too many actual users :) :)

Thanks for offer the cap, may take you up on it some day...

Cheers,
-John
