Cubase 4.0 SMF's

I really like the speed and ease and undo capabilities of Cubase 4.0.
It's a great way to make precision MIDI Tracks and editing these tracks as overdubs for controller automation is even more editable than my beloved QX-3 hardware sequencer.
But the problems I have trying to playback via Cubase, the same MIDI Tracks reveals drop outs. On my 21 year old sequencer I have no such issue w/ playback of SMF's or drum tracks to use in VDAT live.
What could I possibly be doing wrong? With MIDI, it either works or it doesn't.
I can hear the dropouts since I know every single nuance and note, and the same SMF played back from the QX-3 through Scope MIDI In which then triggers the selected VSTi or Scope device works perfectly.
Does anyone have similar occurances?
These are active Piano improvisations, so yes they are busy, but I can speed them up to insanely fast tempos in the QX-3 and they still perform perfectly.
Is there perhaps a MIDI Buffer somewhere in Cubase due to it's OMNI style of recording or something.
Thanks,
