I can't find the information I need about being able to run the XITE-1 from a laptop and simultaneously running an eSATA connector to an external 1U which would also need an external connector.
I do see how one can be used, but cannot find examples or information pertaing to multiple external connections.

Is it possible ?
I would like to have a 1U w/ 4 x Raptors, and have XITE-1 running on another external connector.
I keep hearing about guys using USB HDD's with Romplers but I tend to think they are full of crap, or just exaggerating their success. It cannot possibly maintain the high sustained transfer rates of multiple instruments streaming, especially w/ only 1 x HDD running several instruments.

I can only see that everyone makes adapters for eSATA, USB, etc.
I would buy a laptop right now and sell everything else if I could find a laptop w/ the ability to use an SC XITE-1 connector and an eSATA w/ dual ports.
Personally I think it's something that isn't available yet.
These types of usage would drain a battery so fast, that's probably why they aren't out yet.
That's why on the notebook forums I have frequented lately the " experts " are silent when this question is asked.
Once again I am reminded of just what an excellent forum this really is.
We all seem to know each other and our particular uses and don't make up fish stories.

I read the threads for a month before responding, and funny how the guys who make outrageous claims about certain products cannot even answer a simple question w/o saying why would you need that..and only someone who doesn't know how to use partitioning would need that, etc.
Gamers have a whole differnt approach too, when gamers try to say this notebook can't handle x-amount of fps's running a certain game, they too seem to be attacked.

Reminds me of the mooches @ KVR when someone talks about Scope or UAD/PoCo cards.

So maybe next spring I will see something where I can move HDD's from DAW to DAW and hand pack my rig to da gig.

It shouldn't be related to battery life. Battery usage on the whole is for 'on the move' usage like powering up on a train, bus, car or somewhere else without a power outlet. If you were using a laptop in the studio or in a live gig situation you wouldn't be relying on the battery, you'd be connected to mains power like all your other gear.

My point was that in relations to battery life, the demands for laptops are mobility, so such devices are not mainstream, and as in VSTi's and music apps in general, going outside of the mainstream usually is not very profitable. Hence no need to blaze any new trails. But I have another workaround to avoid the eSATA connections.

These concepts are all for next Spring in hopes to use a really small mobile set up w/ serious power and previously unmobile types of use.

Instead of having the latest technology in computer peripherals, I want to use less expensive mature solutions, since Scope's power is mostly DSP based. The show coming up in 2009 will have some excellent new solutions that can be used to take reliance off of the larger, less mobile computers.

This unit could handle all of my cuurent VST Romplers and sampler apps, as it is a powerful ITX based rack ( 2U ).
XITE-1 is a 1U, hardware effects are all 1U, analog synth is a 3U and the new A16U is a 1U. These are all powerful and would need little horsepower from the laptop, but require more connectivity. Which I now think can be done w/o an expensive custom laptop.

But these sure look nice for major power users, which I hope to avoid.

Let me take a wild guess here...

I don't see a problem with your proposed connections. The Xite would be via an ExpressCard (I'm expecting they will do an ExpressCard 3/4 adapter) and your drive chassis would be via an ESata port. There are a bunch of laptops out there now with both ESata and ExpressCard. I believe the Intel PM45 Express chipset gave them the additional PCIe lanes they needed to make this happen, so I'm assuming they are doing a PCIe 1x to the ExpressCard slot, and a PCIe 1x to the ESata connector. Larger laptops typically though... Dell E6400, Asus [G/M]50/51, etc...

The cable coming out of the ExpressCard... anybodies guess... We need to have Xite to see how this is all going to work.

the xite express card will most probably be a proprietary pci(e)-bridge card, like the magma stuff. I doubt that it will host any other function than that.
so this card will use the one express card slot (I don't know if there's a noteboek with more than one slot) and you will have to connect the external storage elsewhere. maybe a NAS with GBit uplink, or the mentioned esata (if that is a multilane capable port).
another option could be a notebook with docking station that either has another express card port or even a pci-e slot. one would have to do some research on that matter...

I'm soon recieving my new laptop, http://www.fujitsu-siemens.com/home/pro ... _3650.html . This one might be a nice one for using xite live, as it is shipped with a decent processor (intel t9400), good enough graphics (max resolution is 1920 x 1080 pixels, let you fit a lot of devices on the 18.4" screen ) and 2x320GB HD (which can be set up either as RAID 0 or RAID 1).

its got eSATA, IEEE1394, USB 2.0 and ExpressCard so connectivity shouldnt be a problem.

The problem is that " a " single eSATA connection is for a single drive.
For the set up I was thinking of, I would have to have access to the PCI-e slot, and pray that it doesn't share it w/ SC's external PCI-e adapter.
There are eSATA racks w/ port multipliers but that is only good for storage seperation, etc. For retrieval purposes they fail to stream from seperate drives efficiently.
I have since figured out a work around using a V Rack, or even a cheap Receptor.
The V Racks will cause many Receptors to be sold on ebay due to their lack of compatability from the lean Linux O.S.
The 2GB 2U versions are enough to keep me in XP32 for a long time.
Plus they are small and I can brag about using an AMD CPU for once.

I will still need a laptop for XITE-1 and a few select VSTi's, but NTN's choice is enough to do the job, and the price is right.

I will stick w/ a known successful config, and add the V Rack or Recptor. Of course I cannot tolerate the weak FX associated with Romplers, so into the Scope Project window they shall go.

Spillproof QWERTY is the way to go.
I have several keyboards that have been Jagerized on stage, but as a back up I have a Jagerproofed AT QWERTY w/ an adapter in a 3U design.
It's the Beige model upper left.
It's color matched by Beige Oberheim controller, I had to have it.

Just FYI...

I am successfully running 3 ROMpler/samplers off external laptop HDD via USB2 - Omnisphere, Superior2, and Kontakt3 (gave up on STS5000 ), with no issues related to transfer/streaming rates.
Usually I run into CPU drain, but this occurs anyways on my main Scope DAW that has these apps. running on main drive.

On my laptop, this just leaves me ready to use PCI cardbus for Xite-1.

Can't tell you what max figures are for the piano. Won't be back in the studio until next week.
I'm using Western Digital, but Maxtor's have also been OK here as well.
