I've just bought an Aphex 104 exciter, and I don't really need it. It's just that I've got a rack that's looking a little empty, and I thought, well, it can keep some of my other gear company...

Now, in a move I probably should've taken beforehand, has anyone got any experience of these puppies? I think I paid more-or-less the going rate (54 quid, plus delivery), and my reasoning was that if I find it utterly useless, I can probably flog it without losing a penny.

Am I right in thinking that these are the units that the PsyQ plug-in is based on? If that's the case, then I reckon it'll come in handy sooner rather than later.

So, anyone else bought any crap off ebay that they don't really need?

Which one did you get? One of the newer type with big bottom? We've got one of the early models here. It's noisy, but it's nice on hi hats & cymbals.

Btw, Ebay is dangerous. ..I know people that I'd call Ebay addicts & it's not always pretty. When you get your mate contacting you every day or so asking what you think of a particular ebay item, you start to wonder if he might have a problem. I got sucked into buying stuff on there myself for a short while, then realized that despite the odd bargain to be had, Ebay in general & it's partner Paypal are basically a pile of consumer-raping garbage.

I use ebay to get electronic parts, hard to find tools and stuff i could not find locally.

Don't get me wrong Neutron, there's a bargain or two to be had on Ebay & I understand the convenience factor is what swings it for some people, but imo there's way too many negative aspects to it for it to be worthwhile. The owners of Ebay get rich while the users of Ebay get robbed blind? No thanks.

deals that look too good to be true usually are. paypal and ebay are vampires. other than that, i've found ebay to be pretty useful and 99% of my transactions have been happy ones.

i have done quite a lot of buying and selling over the years. i have over 400 feedbacks.
music gear is one of the things i would usually avoid, especially things which lots of people want (like DJ stuff)
and for goodness sakes stay well away from popular consumer stuff like laptops,ipods, phones or whatnot.

i got a roll of carbon fiber/kevlar cloth for something im making for about half what they wanted in a retail place and it was perfect.
I got a set of 5C collets and a collet chuck for my lathe and i couldn't even get it around here.
a set of Powerful servo motors and some electronic components for my CNC mill conversion.
Hand made scribers by some guy. very nice workmanship and cheap.

We've got loads of bargains from Ebay, but it doesn't mean that Ebay aren't sucking us dry on fees & paypal charges.

Yikes, me means to start an Ebay war not.

I know someone who was ripped off by a criminal on there and it was not a cheap item.

I've done it again... only this time, it might have been a rather astute purchase!

Not eBay on this occasion though... it's a website that sells off studio gear from closed-down premises. They had an online auction day yesterday and today, and it seems (though I'm not getting my hopes up until I actually receive the invoice) that I've bought a Lexicon 224X with blue LARC for 35 quid.

If that's the case, I'll be fucking laughing!

(I actually put a £5 bid on a 40-channel G-series SSL desk, but that one went for about 12k in the end...)

it's a give and take
been ripped off a couple of times summing up to 600 or so Euro (over several years)
recently made some very good deals that polished the balance ...
if you wanna gain, you got to accept to loose as well

yeah, I lost some bucks, too, but this was the only time all these years. and well, it was somehow my own fault, bidding on an item from a zero-rated newbie. it turned out he tried to sell 10 or more new wavelab 6 packages without intention to deliver at all. the person he misused the address from didn't even have a computer, I heard from other people who "bought" it.
despite losing 140,- I made a steal later with getting an original wl4 for less than 50,- and an upgrade to wl6 for 120,-.
all in all I paid less than half the original price (at that time), which is still good.

and beside that, (almost) all my scope and luna cards are from ebay

ps. but to top your aphex purchase, chris... I've even got two aural exciters I never used but for testing if they're DOA. I moved shortly after the purchase, and they're still in a box somewhere...

You could resort to selling Fridge magnets Stardust. Just be sure to make thousands of different types available & spam all of Ebay's category sections with your adverts. ebay don't seem to mind someone doing that.

they're universal. they just fit into many categories. you can make your studio gear look nicer, stick notes to the bathtub, and, well, you can even you them as... fridge magnets.

as long as you can decide whether the possible gain is worth the risk or not, ebay is quite fine. it has, of course, an addictive effect, to some degree...

Well, yeah that's the type of thing that Ebay have wrapped up. Everyone who uses the site to buy are sell pay them copious amounts of cash for the privilege. Serious business.

it is, indeed. it's a cheap and creative way to give away self designed fridge magnets as christmas presents. I know lots of people who would like that better than all those uninspired useless stuff that is usually made a gift in embarrassment. you don't necessarily have to put your picture on them. really really nice idea...
