I can advise this anyone who has a Steinberg sequencer (Cubase/Nuendo) and is using an AMT8... I used to be in that case, and the shop seller sold me Cubase with an AMT8 - effectively reducing the device to a serial IO machine, without LTB or any other fancy proprietary options the box provides for software from the same manufacturer.
On top of that, the Midex8 is quite some more expensive!

Hi James,
I am interested possibly, as I have an AMT8 and am using this with Cubase SX3. It seems to work well, but if the Midex 8 gives tighter timing with Cubase SX via the LTB protocol then it is def worth trying out.
I need more than 8 Midi ports though, and am presently running my AMT8 with a Unitor 8 MKII, so if I do swap with you I guess I will have to find another Midex 8 to chain together, unless it is possible to use the Unitor 8 together with the Midex 8, although I guess that would defeat the whole idea of getting the benefit of LTB.
Also, where are you located. I am in UK.
And thanks to at0m for the info too, and if you could advise a little more on this and what the best solution might be, that would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Tim

ftp://ftp.steinberg.net/Download/Hardwa ... Manual.pdf
See page 29 on LTB. Linear TimeBase means that MIDI events from the sequencer are sent a bit too early to the MIDEX, when there's free bandwidth, and then at the right time the MIDEX will transmit the data to each MIDI port. This makes that 8 MIDI events can leave the MIDEX at the same time, which is otherwise impossible with a serial protocol. This is only available using Steinberg software, ie. Cubase and Nuendo.
Also
http://knowledgebase.steinberg.net/95_1.html could interest you.
http://www.emagic.de/ would have more info on Emagic's
proprietary protocol which achieves a similar effect for Logic etc. Unfortunately the coorporate firewall blocks that site here, so you'll have to look for an explanation there yourself...
Also note that Emagic drivers for Winblows are ridiculously past their due-date.
Hope this elaborates,
at0m.

Thanks at0m for the advice and links and that makes complete sense now. Cheers
And thanks James, I am definately interested now. So if that is still ok with you then its just a question of sorting out how or when we can swap. I will give you a call later on or tomorrow if that is ok and then take it from there. Thanks

Hi James,
Not sure about that, and not quite sure how I could find that out, unless anyone else here might know. I will have a search around and see if I can find some info about that and will let you know what I can find out.
Also just to let you know I dont mind buying the Midex 8 rather than swapping if that is easier for you.
Cheers
