I've just discovered THIS site. There's lots o information about the urei limiter wich could be useful to understand how it (and Vinco) works and how to build it also! :-)

HERE there's the list of all the DIY devices.

Thank you Lima!

For guys like me, who have no previous experience of vintage analog gear, this is a very handy link. I have never got the hang of vinco, but just by doing what they suggested (output to zero, attack to.01, set GR, set input to get the desired GR on the meter, set OUT level and adjust AD rate), I'm getting great results already. I guess I was wrong in the first step

Point I'm trying to make here is that if you have no knowledge of the original unit being emulated, it'll be harder to learn how to use the software. We don't know the Vinco is an emulation of the Urei 1176, but it is hinted in the GUI and type of controls, but again, you have to make that bridge, if you treat it like an ordinary compressor, it doesn't really work as it should. So this was really helpful!

it's a shame that, due to copyright reasons, developers can't clearly state the hardware they're trying to emulate... Guessing what clever puns they are making with the names and stuff if a tough game when you don't have the "culture".

Thanks again!

Ahh the 1176 / 1176N

A lovely box

I have a confession to make ... and I feel safe making it to my fellow Pulsar / S-C Community .

I've spent all my life in recording studios and remember the late 60s when 1176s were introduced .

In 1999 I bought an 1176N from an acquaintance for $100 then sold it for $2000 .... this financed
my first Pulsar card / PC system .

My studio friends were shocked " How could you?! " ...heresy !

...but ..this Pulsar card ,and subsequent Creamware / S-C cards continue to be the best purchases
I have made for my studio needs ... sometimes I hire an 1176N ... but Vinco is pretty nice .

I feel better now .... now where's XITE-1 ?

Cheers ,

Michael

"Push in 20 to one and four to one simultaneously and it puts the unit into overdrive creating a very impressive sound. "

Could it work using vinco and a controller surface? :D

So you could take a look to THIS site also.
Psyq is very similar to the Aphex aural exciter (i think its a kind of replica) but someone says that Psiq sounds better than the other... ;-)

Thanks, very interesting!
B.t.w. some of my compressors use an adjustable feedback2GR circuit too. It's worth experimenting with those things.

B.t.w.2 I moved to a new place and my studio is up again after some time. It won't be possible to live in a new place without having done something with SDK sometime ... I think ...

Thanks for all the links, guys. I appreciate it. I was intrigued by the possibility of an 1176 tutorial, maybe to specific applications.

No luck.

I also have an MXR 87 Bass Compressor, which is more or less *modelled* after the 1176, and have some good experience with that getting both limiting and lower-ratio bigness out of it. I have found the Vinco to be similar, but a lot more colored. In a very good way, at least for Bass. I also like the MasterComp from dNa, you don't really have to tweak it much, even though the knobs are there.

Yeah a tutorial on Vinco I'm trying to make in ScopeRise if there's any more tips anyone can give, would be appreciated. Tau's tip above is a good start - once you work out GR he refers to is labelled as 'Red' on Vinco (gain reduction).
