Boy Oh Boy,

I was there once buddy so this one is easy for me.

Depending on what you want to record, the mic pre that's great for live work, and a cheaply priced entry is......http://www.fmraudio.com/RNP8380.htm.

It's a great starter, and once you start getting picky and wanting something high end, this will serve as an excellent live mic pre as it's built w/ ease of use, and sounds really decent. I will be adding one more to our live rig.

For high end there are tons out ther like the Audient Mico which is a hardware equivelant of a high dollar console' channel.

For mics you can't go wrong with a Shure 57 or BETA 58. They will record anything w/ decent quality.

The FMR's can't be found used but the Shures go for dirt cheap on ebay.

I have been recording a rotary cabinet off and on for a month or so, and finally captured the sound on the Audient Mico w/ a PR400 Heil. The same recording w/ an FMR was barely noticable after some treatment, and 4 x times CHEAPER.

Happy Hunting.

that's right, you'll need a mic pre of some kind.
