In case of trouble - new P5K

I fried my other desktop about a month ago. I changed PSU and everything seemed ok, but after awhile i did get more and longer interupts.
Two days ago i went shoping - new MB, RAM and CPU.
.......Now this PC rocks.
....so i deceided to do the same upgrade on my DAW.
Today i bought the same RAM and CPU together with a ASUS P5K MB.
I had to abandon my good Matrox P650 and get a fanless 2*DVI PCI-E card.
Only thing left before start-up, is to get a USB mouse and keyboard as there is no sockets for my old - conspiracy.
Going to the shop now.

Trouble might begin here! "PITY THE MAN"

Thanks next to nothing - but too late.
In fact i wanted a new keyboart and mouse (i must admit)
I've installed Win XP and Scope 4.5 drivers and are updating window now.
I need some new hardware. The new Graphic card was not what i needed - only 1 DVI and 1 analog, so i need to return it monday.
I'm also waiting for more RAM (only 1 2GB in store).
Would it we wise to install Cubase 4 without update?
I think the latest update was working relatively ok, but maybe 4.0.0 was better?? Adwise wanted!

well, you can just switch over to a P690. they are said to consume 10W only, have 2 dvi and are able to be extended with another card (good ol' PCI for instance, and PCIe x1, iirc) to a 4 screen setup. a qid couple can even do 8 screens.
no need to abandon your habits

I went back into the arms or matrox after having nvidia cards for years. no time for games anymore, so what?

P690 - I'll look around tomorrow kylie.
No doubt, Matrox rocks.
Trouble is, few shops around here got them. I'll check

i don´t want to spoil the party, but just in case you encounter some problems, like glitches or crackling - it might ce the p5k board. i used to have it and had to return it as it was said to generate just that crackling problem that i had.
so check it out, good luck and all the best for you!

Well luigicampala, i guess its the P5K that will spoil the party - if any.
The good thing is, i have installend all programs (i hope).
Win XP is updated to SP3, the rest of the progs are not updated.
The project is paused, need som parts.

Most trouble seems to be canceled!
Cubase 4.1.3 and Scope 4.5 seem to cooperate.
The only thing noe is i cant use wave source/dest
i get this:
Can't find DSP file Wave In 16 - please check installation
16 might be because i have the wave source connected to STN ch 16.
Audition 1.5 don't find Scope wavedrivers either

Strange interupsts!
Looks like Scope and Plug-Ins are installed ok (Not tested Flexor yet)
Cubase 4 with latest fix .
When I open a project in Cubase, it plays well -and meters move as the are supposed to on both Cubase and Scope.
Then - after a while I lose controll over the PC, the keyboard and the mouse dies. Cubase and Scope cont. playing, no cracking, meters ok.
Not even a spike on the Task manager.
When i restart, there is no pop-up warning there has been a seriouse error.
I can't find the logic in this error!
Any idea???
PS With Cubase 4 without the latest fix, it seemed ok ......but i'm not 100% sure.
Only other update was Syncrosoft

I read something here lately about USB dispense mode, which you can disable in BIOS. It sounds like this is the problem.

Thx Championsound, but what is USB dispense mode.
Can't find it in bios - another name?
By the way, wave drivers are ok - I dissabled the codex during install, now its ok.

Concerning the dispense mode, look here
http://www.planetz.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=25301
Another thing is probably if you are running a USB mouse and keyboard they might interfere with Scope, maybe they are sharing the same IRQ, which is quite likely.
Look it up in the device manager. Maybe changing either the USB connections or the PCI-Card slot helps.
In addition to this you can check the latency of your board with this tool
http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml
Watch for heavy spikes (i have an latency max of 28µs, so you can compare)

Thanks luigicampala
- I could not find any dispense mode HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\USB
The USB entry was not included in this path, though a lot of other usb* folders like usbuhci, usbstore, usbprint etc
- But when it comes to sharing - i got it - big times
One misstake was,i installes all cards - should installed only one and added the other two after install complete.
I guess there aint easy to change IRQ's?
The latency test maxed at 63

try to disable the usb controller that are sharing your boards. that would be most logical reason as the problem is concerning your mouse and keyboard.
i personally had problems with the jmicron controller as iwas using ide-harddiscs.
try to find out which usb connections are left.
good luck!

you're going to need to disable at least the usb controllers that are sharing with Scope.
good god, you've got a lot of unecessary controllers hogging resources! there's a raid controller and built in audio, not to mention the asus thing, graphics card? you could even disable the pci-e roots if you aren't using those slots, although system controllers like that usually don't make troubles...
if you eliminate all the unneeded or unused controllers things would look a lot better(serial, parallel, etc.)

Thx luigicampala and garyb.
I did remove a USB removable hardisk (it's for backup, so it should not be connected when it's not in use) and my playing time with Scope and Cubase raised from approx 15 min to approx 80 minutes
The strange thing is the PC seems running perfectly with wave drivers.
I'll test more on that.
The Asus thing is a PCI-e graphic card
I need USB for
2 for 2dongles
1 for mouse and keyboard,
2 for midi -UC-33 and keyboard
I'll try to remove RAID and Audio first

that's not how usb works. one controller can handle several usb devices and ports. go ahead and disable the controllers that are sharing irqs after disabling the unneeded stuff.
that's an unfortunate design that ends up with pci-e and pci slots sharing irqs. likely there won't be a problem after you finish the job.

This is how it looks now.
It works well for about 30 minutes - then .....bang.
I marked the graphic card yellow
What more can i try to disable?
If i dissable the graphic driver, i guess its get rather dark

is it just a matter of time ( 30 min.) before the problem occurs? or is it when you do a specific thing, in a specific program that the problem occurs? ( it could be that it was just a coincidense that i stopped working after 30 min. and the real problem was you doing somethin specific.)
what if you just turn on the pc, not using it, and leave it there for 30 min. does it crash as well?
time to me sounds like a cooling problem... i know it sound weird, but i just cant see how software could mailfunction because of the number of minutes it has been used...

hi the19thbear
I put Cubase to repeat the same project over and over, so i aint near that pc during this tests. And there is no screensaver, powersaver or so.
The pc runs fine (Scope starts at start-up) with a smal start-up project.
I seems like its the cambination Cubase & Scope it dont tolerate!
I have stared cont playing with Melodyne now, so i can hopefully sort out Scope as the troublemaker.
The minutes is not constant - last 3 try with Cubase was 4 - 30 -27 minutes,
so its hard to tell what is triggereing this behavier.
I'll be back (Arnold) with the Melodyne results
