I'm going to New York soon and I figure I may as well take advantage of the exchange rate and stock up on some nice vinyl.

Any cats here know some good spots for funk/fusion/jazz/hip-hop/brazilian/afro-cuban vinyl? I know about Academy and A-1 but I'm looking for more possibilities. I'll be staying slap bang in the middle of Manhattan and will also be visiting Brooklyn (Williamsburg). It will probably be tricky for me to get to other areas.

Take him to the Village by Washington Park area.

There are several little shops that carry many things.

I re stocked my old 8-track tape collection there, and even found Black Sabbath Paranoid.

I take it when a man from England goes to NYC in October, he either loves the weather, or loves the AES show.

Autumn is NYC is grand. I am envious.

It's funny you should mention the weather.. the last time I was in NYC they had the remnants of a hurricane come all the way up the coast. It was pretty intense I can tell you, even by british standards. Anyway thanks for the tips, Ken I've PM'd you, hopefully we can hook up to say hello!

Hey man! At leats you're not going to NYC when it's -15 degrees !!!

They have problems with 747's skidding off the runway into the sea at the airport & homeless tramps becoming frozen solid overnight when it's that cold !!

I'm no expert on NY record shops unfortunately Darkrezin, but I did spot some decent looking places in Greenwich Village. There's a great rasta shop there too, where everything they sell is made of hemp

Shroomz is correct, I say the Village but it is Greenwich Village.

When I was up there in the late '70's it was THE place.

yes, but there are often new ones...

When I was a little less mature, about 6 years ago, I went to a great store in Reno and bought 500 + albums for 50 cents apiece. I just grabbed the ones I liked the covers of and we did our project studio's wallpaper with them.

It was pretty cool lookin' but they reflected the sound so bad my buddy took 'em down and made his sons wall out of them.

It was a good idea that didn't pan out as the bass traps and baffles cost more than the album wallpaper did, so my motivational idea didn't work. But it sure looked cool to me.

This store had 1000's of old albums though, I wish I could have kept them. But I gave my father the clear red ones of Stan Kenton's Artistry In Rhytym w/ that singer named June something. They danced with Russian Hussie's over in China to that music or something, so it brought back some memories. He still plays old Gershwin, and Glenn Miller LP's all the time. Even people hard of hearing like old vinyl.
