Free guitar lessons

Can anyone recomend a good, FREE, downloadable or online guitar course for a complete novice. I bought a guitar at the weekend, but there aren't any presets

I just need to know some simple chords and a how to play riffs. My hands seem too small for some of the chord shapes I've found on the web, so I'm probably holding it wrong or something.
Many thanks.
Chris

Try these
Code: Select all
1---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
2---|---|---|---|---|---|-3-|---|
3---|---|---|---|---|---|---|-4-|
4---|---|---|---|---|-2-|---|---|
5---|---|---|---|---|---|-1-|---|
6---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
2---|---|---|---|-3-|---|---|---|
3---|---|---|---|---|-4-|---|---|
4---|---|---|-2-|---|---|---|---|
5---|---|---|---|-1-|---|---|---|
6---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
They might be something like Emaj add 7/9 and Dmaj add 7/9.
Don't know if there's around something that better suit your degree or your taste, neither if you already know it, but you can have a look here.

You could start playing power chords (picking 2 strings only, using 1st and 3rd or 4th fingers of the left hand. The notes are the main of the chord and the related natural 5th). In the meanwhile you could practice with more complex chords...

your hands aren't too big, although contrary to popular belief, smaller hands are better.
it's hard.
and awkward at first.
keep trying, you'll get it. it will take longer than you thought, though....

Well it's not free but you tend to get what you pay for if you know what I mean .
You could try 50 licks rock style dvd by tom kolb or alternatively and although I haven't used it you could try "Accelerate your Guitar Playing" out of berklee college, another dvd . I've used Accelerate Drumming...and Accelerate Keyboard and they are both incredibly informative, educational and constructive and the tutors at berklee KNOW what they are doing in terms of leading you nicely along and structuring the challenges so that you can continually get your rocks off and think what a clever little fellow you are
I'm in Oz but I get my dvds from The guitar connection in new york, check them out but make sure you get dvds you need to see them doing it too . Good Luck

I had fogotten this in my first post.
If you're interested in learning some theory (it does help), like quickly find notes on fretboard, scales and chords theory and other, this is a link to free lessons

A good teacher is always a great thing however, especially in the first period.
It's not good learning something the wrong way.
Video clips help provided that you really pay attention to the details; in learning time and in playing time.

some videos (french site, but the guitars don't speak french and by watching may be you can get a few tricks/exercises)
http://www.partoch.com/cours/?cours=video
a teacher is best especially at early stages, not to get bad habits which are very had to get rid of, a dvd video can be cool for first approach, finding your preffered tracks official tabs is great too but requires time to work ( all instruments require time to work anyway).

There's only one way of learning how to play and that's just doing it. If you can find somebody in your entourage who plays and has a bit of patience, all the better. That's how I learned. Lots of Beatles songs in those days. Best way to learn harmony and melody at the same time.

I know they're NOT free but ..
I just got the "accelerate your guitar playing" by Tomo Fujita , out of Berklee College and first impressions are that it's very good just like the others in the series . highly recommended. Watch carefully and it will get you going in the right direction .
If you are into rhythm playing and in particular funk rhythm then" funk rhythm guitar chops" ,part of the beyond basics range by a guy called Allan Slutsky is very informative and shows how to do some excellent rhythm parts and you get a well researched history too . If you do get any of these just dont rush it ..watch very carefully and proceed through the tutes in the order they're presented . I dont disagree with paulr in what he says at all but you young guys have so much more than we did in the way of resources that are relevant to our art that it would be a shame to ignore them . If you work slowly and steadily and PAY ATTENTION you can save yourself years of development ,and thats just gotta be a good thing hasn't it
