16 Channel Mixer

After months of work I'm very happy to announce the long awaited wolf audio design mixer.

Image
(click on the pic to view full size)

This mixer is highly configurable and introduces some features not yet seen on scope.
For example you can trigger a modular via midi notes (!), while it is sitting between some inserts fx.
Even better you can move it around inbetween them .. just with a mouse click.

The mixer building project started to evolve the last years due to the practical need in audio productions.
Therefor the devices are inspired by the needs of day-to-day usage.
For example the mixer user interface has all inserts visible at once, small pre/post master insert VU and RMS meters right on the main surface, colorable channels, etc.

features in a nutshell :
  • 16 mono or stereo channel strips (switchable)
  • integrated modular shell with separate midi channel for each channel strip (as instrument or effect)
  • 6 inserts (5 plus modular shell) with freely (!) selectable order, parallel or serial, mixed mono & stereo plugins
  • true stereo pan
  • pan with 0 dB (standard),-2.5 dB or -6 dB center damping (retains level, when panned left/right)
  • stereo aux sends
  • multi midi channel support (includes pitch bend, relative & absolute controler and note messages)
  • midi automation resolution up to 0.03 dB (!) for volume & aux send level
  • Mackie Control Support (including feedback for the controler surface)
  • mute & solo groups
  • colorable channel strips (bottom and channel area seperated -> two different colors for one channel)
  • integrated control room (4 outs), includes bypassing of master insert section and therefor easy comparing, etc.
  • rms and peak level meters on main surface but also as separate surface
  • correlation meter
  • whole device savable and renamable
  • less cable clutter in routing window (at least for me :-) )
  • all important stuff like inserts visable at a glance
  • dynamic dsp allocation (i.e. if a channel isn't connected), but also manual
some self-evident stuff :
  • 32bit integer through the whole signal path
  • phase compensated
  • preset list sharing between channel strips (separate for midi & audio settings)
  • both channels of a stereo fx are feeded, when behind a mono fx
  • comprehensive manual
multi midi channel support :
As scope doesn't offer native multi-midi support for a device I had to create my own solution. The advantage of this solution is, that this mixer is MackieControl compatible, disadvantage is that the learn function does not work for multichannel mode (it is still possible to assign controlers via learn, but not for multichannel assignments). You'll find more information about this in the manual.

Additionally to the mixer itself following devices are part of the mixer pack :
  • MatrixInsert (the insert matrix as separate device)
  • 48 band spectrum analyzer
  • dsp-light LowCut

wow, it's done... :)

I miss somehow the section on mutegroups and how they are controlled. well, I had just minutes for jumping through the manual...

since I got a big card while you were busy developing I'll give it another try now :). well, my screen is the limiting factor now...
btw, can you switch channels off the gui as well, when you unload them from dsp?

nice site redesign, btw.

Hi Markus,

mute/solo groups: just click on one of the LEDs beside the mute/solo buttons to assign them to a group ;-)
Unfortunately I didn't found a way yet to add/remove channel strips like the dynamixer does. However the surface should fit nicely on a 1280x1024 screen resolution.

best
Wolfgang

so I have grouped them (there are 2 mute and 2 solo groups around, as I would guess). but how do I mute those different groups? surely not with the master mute...?! :)
do my eyes just miss the buttons?

then I'm gonna have a problem right now :)

I'm sorry :)
I thought 1280x1024 is quite usual these days ..

Yeah, damn this thing looks really cool. Wolf, does it work OK with a Behringer BCF?

aeh, well, I just expected them somewhere in the main section...
so did I understand you right, that pressing mute (the big button) on one of the channels mutes all the others in the same group (alll that have the little led on)? that would of course mean that a channel can't be in different mute groups at the same time (or muting that particular channel would mute both groups the channel is in.) not that this is an all day feature, but well, it's good to know what's possible and what's not... :)

you are absolutely right. but my screen died, and I have a spare 15" now until I can upgrade. I just said I have a problem now :(

Shure. You can switch it to MackieControl compatible mode (I think, it's a preset there).
Generally all MackieControl compatible control surfaces should work right out of the box. Other control surfaces might need some adjustments.
that would of course mean that a channel can't be in different mute groups at the same time (or muting that particular channel would mute both groups the channel is in.)

Yes. Actually this limitiation is a fix for a special behaviour of scope, which forces you to restart scope/your computer (a neverending alert "full stack limit reached").
but my screen died, and I have a spare 15" now until I can upgrade. I just said I have a problem now
umh, too bad .. 15" is really small .. very small ..
I hope you can solve problem soon :)

well, it's ok, as long as I know about it.

me too. I cannot spend too much on equipment this moment, so it has to wait the one or the other month. (maybe it's because of greedy me wanting 2 screens all at once :D ).

That's do nicely!! I'll have one of them. Card waved.

My Bitstream 3X does Mackie emulation very well.

Wolf, I paid for the Step32/MTB yesterday. Can you sling it over with the mixer?

This depends a lot on the amount of interest.

Wolf,
You sneaky bastard. Sounds and looks marvelous.

Do you have a small pdf. I could read that would be a little more detailed?

Nice, 1280 x 1024 for onstage viewing, or for blind guys like me.

Thanks Wolf,
I was in a reading mood. Tonight is a good time to read this and think of the possibilities for recording. I am fascinated by the mixers that 3rd party developers have made for Scope. I seem to be a collector of sorts.

There are the basic Scope mixers which are quite good, but somewhat outdated IMO. That's where the 3rd party guys come to the rescue. I have keyboard mixers, and special live mixers. This one looks like a great recording mixer.

+1 for 32 or 48 mixer channels

stereo fx sends - fantastic!! :) but would really need at least 6 - but why not 12? With DSP allocation this would be great - we are using computers here not hardware, so why not make the most of it!!!

Same with Buses - why only 4 when you can, in reality, have an endless amount - only limited to the cards' DSP!! 8 Buses would be a minimum for me!!

More fx sends and buses means more options to experiment and be creative. I know, using Scopes fantastic routing options, it is possible to get pass any fx send/bus limits that I may feel a mixer has, but it so much more condusive to a good work flow to have it all incorporated within the mixer.

Hope you could update the mixer with the extra channels, buses and fx sends. I would definately purchase it then - I would, of course, be willing to pay extra for these extras!!!

Nice compact design and useful features - I especially noticed the reording of insert fx!! I really appreciate what you give to the Scope community. :)
