I need to know the title of a song that made the french jazz/pop/electronica band Air famous.
It is easy going, a softly ringing ride cymbal is going on all the time mostly, there is a voice singing like a woman but actually it's one of the male band members, and a sopran sax (?) is soloing groovy.
It could be on the maxi cd Premiers Symptomes, 1997, Virgin, but it could also be on the album Moon Safari, 1997, Virgin.
who knows what I mean?

I think the song that made Air famous was "Sexy Boy" - which doesn't fit your description...

But the track you're looking for is probably "All I Need", from Moon Safari. There's no vocals on any track of Premiers Symptomes...

well, I was kinda sure that "all I need" was the first song that made me notice air, but maybe it was "kelly watch the stars" instead...?!
(it's the only song I remember from the album "moon safari", apart from "all I need" and "sexy boy" :) )

with a realplayer installed you can listen to snippets on
http://www.amazon.de/Moon-Safari-Air/dp ... 729&sr=8-2

maybe it's something completely different... :)

for me it would be 'Kelly watch the Stars' - it got a lot of rotation with the insane videoclip of the 2 girls playing table-tennis :D
it has a gorgeous fake Theremin solo, which in fact is a Casio SK1 sampler's (sick) portamento

thousend times sorry guys, I messed up two names, I was after Saint Germain, a totally different band.
the sound demo's in the link by Kylie made me clear that I was wrong, and I found a friend who knew about :-)
thanks for trying to help me out, and sorry again :-)

yes, quite different :-D
'I want you to get together' is probably the title, and it's a trumpet which is soloing in the first half, later it are (tenor and barriton) saxes.

Yup "Rose Rouge" would be my guess too.

Still a cool track - just listening to it here.

I believe the story about that album is that somehow St. Germain gained access to Blue Note's legendary recordings from way back then and created these modern jazzy house tracks using samples from the original recordings :o , something noone else has been permitted to do by the copyrightowners.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Cheers!
Thomas

I'm afraid you're wrong as that priviledge was granted to US3 with their famous 'Hands on the Torch' .
btw. I'm just listening to the track in question 'Rose Rouge' :D
the vocal sample is Marlena Shaw 'Live at Montreux'

probably inspired by the album title 'Tourist' the German TV used another track from it 'So Flute' as background music during their Tour de France coverage a couple of years ago.

Funny, I know that track by US3/Herbie Hancock that you are talking about "Watermellonman". I guess a glorified DOH! is in order. Thanks for putting me right :)

Still I remember a story about someone being very lucky getting access to the old Blue Note archives, but I can't find it. Maybe it was US3 or maybe US3 never got the permit but did it anyways or maybe "it's just all in me head"?

it was released on Blue Note tho... :-)

indeed, 'Tourist' is a Blue Note Record and the story about Ludovic Navarre (the dude behind St. Germain) is true.
He also got access to the Blue Note archive - that he wasn't the first one is a fact, but of few concern. It's an excellent recording and it does (like the US3 release) full justice to the old tracks.
In fact those records are a proof how great and timeless the music on the old tapes was :)
