Our galaxy is The Milky Way. One Million galaxies have been photographed. The images come from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey telescope in New Mexico, US.

Volunteers are needed to help classify them online:

The results will be collated by a team of astronomers from Oxford University, Portsmouth University and Johns Hopkins University in the United States.

The quality of those images presented for classification sucks big time.
How can one classify pixel artifacts?

well, for such cases you got 2 options for unclear objects...
I dunno the details of the project, but obviously it's about to identify as much as possible, not necessarily all

a 'spot of dirt on the mirror' will never get pictured at all - this only applies to objects in the focal plane (on the sensor), which is compensated by the camera software. Afaik each 'dot' of the sensor is individually calibrated and classified regarding it's working conditions
