Does MS installer service is required for Scope installation?

And more, which of the XP services are essential in order to Scope correctly installs and works?

I know there's lot of documentation about, but I'd be very thankful if anyone could write or point out a quick list.

can i install SFP BEFORE installing the VST host, if i plan no XTC mode ???

Do i have to leave empty the VSTplugins directory fields ???

How can i manage the things if i'd decide to enable XTC after installing SFP in 1st instance??

This may look just like an annoying question, but i'm trying to understand if all is running fine within the VST plugins management in my host.

well, just run the installer again is the easiest way. if you do it over the old install, you shouldn't lose anything, but xtc mode will be added.

In the meanwhile i'm running a fresh XP installation with only SFP 4.0 installed, but I forgot many of the workarounds.

yes, but you would still need to restart the sequencer.....

I'm in troubles here.
Xp freezes.
At the moment it's happening when I change latency without closing SFP.

Looks like it happens only when both boards are plugged.

It happens a couple of minutes after the power on, even without loading anything (but the start project) in Scope. ( I mean if I change the setting within the first minutes from the boot all goes fine)
Thinking about a thermal issue I made some test heating single boards plugged in any combination (up to 60°), and cooling both the boards (by an hairdryer), but nothing changes

You're sure it's not a power supply issue? Current draw can be a problem with several cards in a system that has a fair number of other peripherals (or an older PSU). There's a freebie you can use called Speedfan that will help you monitor temps & voltages.

I didn't think about a voltage issue 'till now, cause I replaced the PSU since less than an year with a brand new 500W Enermax unit.

Though, using Asus Probe I can see voltages have the right values and are in an horizontal linear trend. However I'll have a try disconnecting some disk unit, just to stay in full certainty.

- first a suggestion that works miracles on many occations; try changing PCI-ports for your scope cards

- try deleting everything from your startup project. still same problem?

- i see you have 2 cards, is the stdm cable properly connected?

EDIT: do this happen only when you have your sequencer loaded?

Ok, I've repeated the tests and it definitely appears like a thermal related problem.
All seems to run fine if the temperature of the CW boards is below 44° C (MoBo temperature = 38°). But it seems it can raise up to 60° (MoBo = 55°) without any faults using a single board.

Is it normal?

If it is, how can achieve to work below that value without a jet sounding case?

I've already installed two additional fans (front and rear of the case, the front one blowing into, the rear one extracting). Also the CPU fan has been replaced with a Zalman...

I can't change PCI slot cause one of the three availaible on my Asus P5GDC is too close to the video board (a board plugged there will be quite touching the GPU cooler); too hot and noisy place for a DSP board IMO.

Nothing changes if I try using an empty project. (After some crash all the settings in SFP are changed: start project loads with in/out modules only, blank default directories, classic GUI view, CW cursor...)


STDM cable seems to be properly connected. I don't have another one for try replacing it, but I can correctly see all the DSPs and their load in the DSPs load window...

No definitely I don't have any sequencer installed in the system at the moment. I made this choice trying to avoid any possible windows registry corruption by bad installed apps. I'm running a test setup using XP sp2 updated using Autopatcher (no security updates installed cause I don't surf by DAW). The only tweaks I tryied was disabling periferals sharing IRQs, disabling video hardware acceleration and background tasks optimization. All drivers and BIOS are updated. Only SFP and some small utility like Asus Probe are installed (of course I tryied without AsusProbe running in background).

Maybe I'm on the way to solve the thermal issue.
I've changed the air direction for one of the case fans. Now both are extracting, and this way more air come in from the slits near PCI boards.
It was an hard way to find the right RPM for the adjustable fans ( the CPU one and the case rear one ). Don't know why, but if the CPU fan goes too fast, PCI boards become hotter.

At the moment, running a project full of masterverbs till the maximum DSP load I can work without the above mentioned fault. I didn't yet made exhaustive tests, but those few were made with a room temperature close to 30° C.
The only grief is for the increased air/fan noise dBs from the DAW.
But these were just extreme conditions tests.
I will try in lower room temperatures by air conditioner if it will be possible to lower fans speed.

Now there are a couple of things I'm wondering about:
- if it's a common thermal issue, or if there's something wrong with my hardware/setup.
- how come running a full DSP load project engages 10% of CPU resources.
