I thought the mix was fine.

In terms of mix, I think there's a little too much chorus/spatialization for my taste. Sounds like I stuck my head into the sound field, as opposed to the soundfield being a little bit infront of me.

Nice groove framwork tho. You know me, I would have emphasized the synth chord stabbs to make them a stronger groove statement.

The part where the trumpets come in, it might be good to pan the sax and trumpets oppposite of each other for that particular part, since some phrases seem to be out of tune with each other, and also because the registers are very close.

Also, a mixing thing.. The bass functions as an atmospheric "pad" type of base the way it is right now, which is fine, but another approach might be cutting the extreme lows, and using the higher frequency sounds of the bass to make a more melodic, more animated bass phrase could create a more punctuated, funky groove.

Interesting point about the bass, Ken. My idea was to try and get that sub-bass feel of D&B that I hear a lot of in Lounge music.

The saxes and trumpets are positioned in the field as a big band would be in real life so I am not sure if I want to split them up the way you suggest.

Let me try those suggestions.

I know I also need to bring the drums into the same "room" as the other instruments. Of course, my guitar solo sucks as well....

I only listened to it on the internet machine, but it seems that you have at least a part of the drums coming in parallel (I don't think the phasing is intended) maybe that spoils the 'room' (?)
good choice for the guitar tone - couldn't help but the track would remind me at Sergio Mendez if it were just slightly more latinized ...

Do you have any possibility that this might be played by a real band sometime ?
It would sound so much better (as the composition and arrangement have the substance) - this is a clear vote for 'live' music and shows how far sequencing is from 'the real thing'.

all in all, i like it.
what i don't like is the synthetic sax lead. i don't mind the horn sections sequenced, but i'd rather hear a purely synth tone than a sampled saxophone...

I would repeat what said Gary, exactly. You play the sax semi-staccato, so the synthetic sound comes even stronger up front.

The groovy is simply great!

What I most like is the full section, when everything plays together, that starts at 2:33

The guitar solo, I just know you can do much, much better than that Paul, so it is just a matter of getting the time to improvise for a couple of hours before recording, and I’m sure you’ll come up with something cool. The sound of the guitar it isn’t either of my taste, I would expect some funky song, perhaps using a wahwah, and all on the contrary, a dirty sound instate of such a crystal clear one.
