Quick piece of battle music I made for a game (medieval/fantasy setting). I'm still getting to grips with taming a virtual orchestra, but I generally like how this one came out.

Cheers,

I really like the percussion work, not too sure about the harmonizations.. the overall sound is great tho. What library are you using?

Hi kensuguro,

I'm using Quantum Leap Symphonic Orchestra Silver, from EastWest. I'm forcing myself to make at least one orchestral piece a week, since I'm completely green to composing for orchestra. For now, I have to cover up my haphazard harmony work with electronic drums so that it's even passable! I'm hoping that in the coming months I'll get more familiar with what each instrument's role is in the big picture and be able to use that to carry my melodies into music.

this is a pretty cool place for orchestration tips
http://www.northernsounds.com/forum/for ... y.php?f=77

It's based on Korsakov's "Principles of Orchstration", moderated by Garritan. And the northernsounds forum in general is a great source of orchestration tips.

Basically though, if you get comfortable with a typical 4 voice arrangement, and also get comfortable with moving around different keys, the rest is just details that you can probably fix by ear.

My personal opinion is, though, is that I like to just throw the harmony book out the window and work with tones, or colors. Do the basic harmony by the book, but focus alot on the instrument grouping, how you double a certain part, or do an octave unison.. Obviously you can change the tone of a certain part (within the 4 voices) quite alot with just the different combinations. I just to play with that, personally.

very good job, I think it would profit from some reverb to make it sound even larger...

seems slightly to dry to my ears.
Arrangement is perfect and reminds e on battle...danger..

yeah like it! and it fits the needs of a game. i'd also like to hear a bit more room, especially on the drums... but just a matter of taste...
