Just wondering about taxes amount in different countries.

For shure, a discussion about the whole fiscal device could be really complex and, for many people, boring. So I mean to limit the matter to purchase taxes.

Purchase tax amount here is 20% of the buy value, and it's applyed substantially on everything (except for foods that are no taxed, and for real estates, or goods like fuel, alchool, tobaccos, which purchase is taxed using different rates). It means that if I buy a nail, or a Ferrari, the 20% of the price I pay is cashed by the State Administration. (I hope I've correctly used verbs and prepositions).

Then, how does it work in your countries? What's such rate amount there? Does this kind of tax is used everywhere in the world?

I work 4 cash, and have to do major creative financing just to keep 60% of my net income. That doesn't include the fees of my creative consultant either, usually 250 USD per quarter. If I do not file quarterly, I am penalised by the IRS, which I wish would cease to exist.

VAT ("Value Added Tax") in the UK is 17.5% currently.

There is a lower rate which is applied to energy (gas & electricity) and a much higher rate applied to cigarettes and alcohol. Not sure about petrol, but I think that's pretty highly taxed too.

I think the only people who enjoy little or no sales tax are the americans

Excuse Me? Little or no tax? I still can't sit down comfortably from the reaming the IRS gave me in April!! I get my Ass F----d 4 times a year. Bush actually reduced our taxes in my bracket of income, but we are far from the 20% that my brothers in europe speak of. Then we can add the sales tax, and the cigarette tax, the gasoline and diesel tax, the...............!! The democrats are far worse when it comes to taxing it's citzens. I starved when Clinton was in office due to capital gains tax, flooring taxes on warehousing of wholesale items,etc.,etc,...Bush's only thing going is he gave the working man a break, and we all made buccu dinero on our real estate. A 375,000 USD chunk of land is appraised at 625,000 USD since he took office. As much as we all despise his private wars and oil policies, I have to say I live in a place where I turn down work, and have doubled my money on Real estate. My fiancee has so many dancers employed, that she can house them 4 the first 2 weeks of their stay in LV! I used to have them over at the house, but that won't be happening anymore. Too bad eh. She use to say ..Baby I'm going to work, watch the girls 4 me O.K. sheeeiiitt! Life was good. I'd gladly pay 20% a year. I would have a truly obese rig then. 3 or 4 SFP DAW's.

High real estate prices put many couples & families out of the market while others cash in on an earlier investment. All's fair in love & war as they say tho.

Ehh - S4L, I think you've/we've got something confused. I see a difference between TAX and VAT. TAX is what I pay directly off my income. The tax-pressure in Denmark is, if not the highest then at least one of the highest in the world: about 50% of your income depending on how much you actually earn. The more you earn the more you have to pay.

Then for the remaining 50% I have to pay an additional 25% VAT on all the stuff I buy: food, Computer-gear, music-gear etc...

About 1/3 of all the tax-income in Denmark are spent on solcial welfare in some form.

And you all know what? If this is the price I have to pay in order to live in a fairly secure society where people don't go around shooting each other over pennies I'll pay it gladly.

Well said my friend, and I also agree with your concern with safety. Our social programs in the USA vary on what party is in control. We go from feeding the homeless and providing drug rehabilitation programs, to throwing people off of welfare and making them work. It's not perfect, but those who work hard and provide an education for their children usually have family values, and therefore have a higher sucsess rate. I'm glad your country is safe and secure. I was commenting mostly on the idea that Americans pay little or no tax. We in the working mans class foot the bill 4 the rest of the country, as we are the 65-70% of the population. The largest tax base in the world according to the National Statistics Poll of 2000. If you are wealthy you can slide with the help of a good accountant/lawyer, but we in the middle pay 30-40% of our income, which is far from little or nothing. I wish to visit your beautiful country someday, as nothing is more gratifying 4 an American to see where his roots were started. We will probably wait till our government has a better standing in the world community though, as my friends who tour over there say it ain't what it use to be. Let's hope 4 a better future 4 us all.
I now understand what you mean by VAT. Sorry I forgot, my Oberheim MC3000 was bought at Turnkey in England. The VAT and shipping was extreme, but then again so was the Oberheim.

I said that Americans pay little or no sales tax (VAT). AFAIK the US sales tax is a lot lower than the 19 to 25 % you see in european countries.
This is in addition to stuff like income tax (about 33 percent for me). Not to mention the fact that gasoline and cars in general are probably nowhere cheaper than in the US. The taxes on gasoline are MUCH higher here, probably on cigarettes too.

So quit your moaning and rest assured europeans pay more taxes than americans overall

Norway is most like Petal's Denmark
Incom taxes 30-40% VAT 25%
+ a lot of special taxes (duty).

eg
Someone want to give me (bless those)(for free) a new or old car with 5 litre engine with 300 bhp.
I have to pay ca 500.000 kr ($80.000) enviroment taxes to get this car on the road.

(ca kr 280000 for engine displacement and
kr 220000 for unnessessery horsepower.)

That's twice I embarressed myself this week. Playing a boring gig and tend to drink more. We all get screwed by big brother though. As long as I get my toys I'm alright. I'm weary of taxes, sorry 4 the misunderstanding on the VAT.

In the end you get what you pay for. Everyone would like to see low taxes, but in the end it's always going to mean some things have to give, like social security or health insurance.
