ok symbiote.
i made a silly question again.
sorry. i have to tell microsoft next time.
i suppose that your knowledge about pc's, and music generally is far beyond mine, so...
sorry i made a mistake.
next time i have to be very caraful about what i ask. meanwile i will try to increase my technology and musical knowledge with conversations at other forums.
then when i am ready i will come back to planetz and make good enough questions for experts on pc's and music like you.

The reasons for this can be many:

- Virus
- Windows needs reinstallation (how old is your current windows-installation?)
- Powerfailure - is your PSU powerful enough?
- to much heat
- Bugged software - it happens...

Can you recreate the situation and pinpoint the reason from there?

In other words, we need more info in order to help

psu 580w tagan.
4 hdisks
1 for os, 1 for audio and two other for support. page file is on the third one.
pentium 4 prescott 3.0
478. abit ic7g 875p.
2g ram
asus 512k(128bit) nvidia 6800 vga
scope pro + pulsar2
cards put in pci slots 2 and 4 which do not share irqs
nuendo has many vsts.
i guess that the vsts might cause the instability. not sure.

you asked me about how old is my os instalation.
is there a way to refresh it without the need of formating.
i have formatted my drives many times and i am a little tired of that.
i know that a fresh os is more clear, but are there some places in the xp that need manual clean?
i read somewere that page file should be turned off for scope cards.??

Windows has always gotten unstable over time. It depends on how many programs you install and uninstall over time. In the old days before XP one installation on my machine would last ½ a year. Now it looks liek a fresh install is needed after just under 1 year on my machine.
I do however install all kinds of programs on my machine, games and such. But up untill the point where I installed GigaStudio3 my machine was what I would call stable (not in need of reinstallation), but after GS3 wierd stuff started to happen. I then tried the non-reinstallation approach with a reg cleaner, but in this case it only made things worse, so now it's only a matter of time before I have to do the reinstall.

I hope the rant above somehow creates a picture of "when" you need to reinstall windows(and yes this means formatting c: or at least deletion of everything, which is almost the same thing)

In your case I would start by checking how hot the CPU gets, and also check how hot the case is under use. It looks like you have a lot going in there, and you live in Greece?

Hope it helps.

i don't know the causes of your problem, but to partially restore windows xp, there is a way by replacing some files and it must be done by another boot or by command prompt.
The files to be replaced are located in c:/windows/system32/config

the files to be replaced are "system" and/or "software"

the place where the repair files are located is C:WINDOWSrepair

after the files replacement, you'll need to reinstall drivers and software.

GS3 takes over your computer - it's designed to have a PC dedicated to it. If you try and run it on a machine intended for sequencing or pretty much anything else, you are destined for problems.

Also, don't take offence at this, but don't install warez if you want a problem-free workstation. If you're not running any warez I apologize... it's just that in my experience, most people who come onto forums with problems and lots of VSTs, Nuendo etc with limited knowledge of the software generally have a computer stuffed full of dodgy cracks.

Well my GS3 is legal, but it still is a pretty damn neurotic piece of software - I regard it as a failed investment.

The problem with windows (well, one of them) is that uninstallation of dodgy software, doesn't necsesarilly solve the problem which the dodgy software created.
Meaning, that it still might be GS3 (or other uninstalled apps you once played with) that's causing problems on your windowsinstallation. This is why regular reinstallation of windows is needed. Don't try shortcuts here, especially if you don't know what you are doing, it will only get worse that way.

Req cleaners might help you in some cases, and then again create new or more problems in others, like mine.

Petal, it was more a general remark directed at the original poster.

Not sure if you already knew this, but Tascam provides a special program for cleaning all traces of GS3 from your system. I can't remember what it was called, but it should be called 'pooper scooper'.

it's a known thing that gs3 needs a dedicated system and in my opinion it's surpassed by other products such as emulator x.

For audio pro use, it's not a good thing to install dozens of plugins, but it's good to use the computer as an external multitrack recorder, just install the necessary tools and keep it free from new programs installations and don't use it on the internet.
Test all new stuff demos from another boot and install it on your pro system just after a deep checkout and just if you'll use it.
By following these rules, i run my pro systems by 1 year without any problems.

I bougth Emulator X lately, and i agree, for me it's better than GS, and filters, oh man...

Darkrezin: Yes I know  my point was simply that even when you have the legal version of GS3 it is still pretty fragile compared to many other apps.

Unfortunately what I needed was the strong symphonic capabilities that GS3 provides. But after only a few hours of use, I decided to look elsewhere, and found Vienna Instruments which is the road I'm going to follow for that need.

For normal sampler-needs I use Short Circuit which is great and easy to use. It has a really strong charisma of stableness (if that is a term at all  )

Petal - I hear you... it was the legit GS3 that caused problems here too. And you're right, VSL instruments are the answer to the Tascam nonsense.

I'm also a Shortcircuit fan btw... probably my favourite native plugin

A little utility such as Norton Ghost, is recommended.

Make a Ghost of your system with just xp, drivers and general stuff installed.

Then make one more after all is installed.
