hi shroomz,
the formats for potentiometers are 32 bit tga animations with alpha channel, the names must be as pot001 pot002 and so on and the number of max frames is 128, but 33 is enough for good results (from spacef tips).
For backgrounds panels, 24 bit bitmap.
For faders, can be used 1 single frame for knobs.
For buttons, 24 bit bitmaps are ok.
I'm a beginner in sdk world and this is what i know at the moment and hope this helps.

Do you mean the pot animations are using (for example) up to 128 separate tga files & not a stitched filmstrip?
Yes, i've never tried it with stiched filmstrips, but i think it does not work.
Ok, that sounds a bit like synthedt. Are they done without a 'mask' file, IE is it just one frame, one file?
yes, the horizontal and vertical knobs needs just one file (32 bit tga if you need alpha channel), but a fader can be done by using more images, for example, one image for the knob and one for the strip.
Are buttons & switches done with 2 or more separate files/frames, or are the different states stitched into a filmstrip?
for buttons states, you must do one image for each state.
Hey, any chance of seeing some examples of graphics files used?
Yes, i can send you some of the files used for transient killa, i've done all in 3d world with cinema 4d.

it adds shadows from the knob to the background in the direction you want, the alpha channel is calculated, so, if a pot is circular, the shadow will be circular.
The available settings are:
feather
offset x
offset y
opacity

the shadow settings are different for each pot/knob/fader instance.
I've not yet tried it on irregular shaped pots, but i think that the shadow will follow the shape of the pot.
I'll let you know about it....

Hey Schroomz, how about some really long 3D OSCar knobs that make it impossible to see the parameter, just like the original.
