Hi there

I wonder if anyone can help….

1) I need to completely reformat my hard drive (due to virus, long story..) and reload XP. What are the best utilities that I can use to reformat the drive??

2) What’s better for a DAW win XP sp1 or SP2 ??

3) Can anyone recommend a good program for taking an image of my entire hard drive so I don’t get into this situation again!!

Also if there are any other tips or tricks that I should know about when installing XP that would really help.

Thank you in advance

G

hi
What i would have done, is use another HD for C, install everything on a new HD and use the old infected HD as a template (use it as 2. drive)
When the new C: is ok, format the old C: and use it for data.
A new, decent HD is close to as cheap as a new software!

I use xp sp1, but that is mainly because it works! sp2 should be ok, search this forum might help.

And for 3, a copy should do.
If you use your daw for surfing, you could use a virus program when online
(like the free AVG http://free.grisoft.com/doc/I+need+help

I use Norton Ghost to make an image of a drive - works perfectly every time for me, but you should have a floppy drive and a second hard drive on your machine to make it easy - a 15 minute job all up to reimage.

If your Scope installation is working well and you have various third-party devices etc then I recommend dragging your entire existing Scope folder onto another hard drive. Then install Scope again on your new drive, then drag the old installation on top of the new one.

It will ask the usual Windows "do you want to overwrite existing files" b;ah blah. You say yes. This way all your old devices, projects, presets etc are all immediately as they were.

This seems like a rough method, but I've done it several times with absolutely no malfunctions...

I have not experienced problems with audio using FP2, you can install FP2 at no risk.

A utility that will clean deeply your HD, when you are installing from scratch, is this one:

http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/dri ... scwiz.html

Despite the fact this software is for Seagate drivers only, you can use it without problems to kill your any trademark discs in your system, I have done it for years. If you need to setup your drive, you can only setup Seagate drives nevertheless. It works very well to sweep your disk 100% through full zero writing method.

Another great thing this software does for you, is telling you the configuration and characteristics of your drive, whichever trademark it may be, there is a list of them all. It is great to find out how to switch your drive as slave or master when needed, without having to remove them from your case to see the label instructions.

I have used many times the same solution Spirit is telling you, the replacing of files, so you don’t have to go through the long process of downloading everything again from different places on the net, install and configure again. For me to, it has always worked very well.

For me the way to go for “Virtual Images” of your C drive, is Acronis TrueImage. I have used it for many, many years and has saved me also many times. Ghost and others are more complicated to manage, and their interfaces are not so simple and clear, and, is more expensive. I would definitely recommend TrueImage, as the very best solution of the market.

So there are no issues with Creamware drivers in SP2?

I've been running SP1+ (with MOST updates) with no issues, but am getting ready to migrate to a new machine sometime next year and would like to go to SP2.
