Wow! Amazing story!
Does he mention how many hours he spent in total restoring it?
It does sound nice, but its sounds can be done digitally, no?

great story - great samples
an interesting comparison is the 'classical' dry record examples and the ones that put the instrument in a 'modern' space, makes it really big.
imho those (tons of) LC filters have a main influence on the sound, they are generally known to thicken sound much more than RC types.
LC means a capacitor and a coil determine the frequency, while RC is a capacitor/resistor network.
in industrial style production the latter is much cheaper to produce, so it has become the dominant type.
this instrument must have represented more than a small fortune when it was built - so those part's costs were neglectable.

thanks for the link, Tom

My craftsman hearts beats fast on this project.
It must has been an overwhelming moment for him, when all was restored and he played the first notes.

Great link, thank you.

I was so impressed by that link that I actually wrote Phil. This is his response:
Thanks for the feedback on the Novachord site. I really appreciate it. When I started the site, I didn’t get much email, although the site got many hits. I’m sure many people were thinking, what a pointless endeavor - it’s too much work and those things don’t sound that great. I got (second hand) comment’s like: "Should we send flowers?" or "Seek therapy" etc. Well, it turns out that I am not as crazy as most thought. I have to admit, I never thought it would sound as good as it does.

More sound clips are coming. The site was down yesterday for 8 hours 10 minutes. Sorry about that. Due to numerous downloads of the sound files, I am soon going to reach my bandwidth limit on the site. Until I get this sorted out with my hosting service, the sound files will be limited. This will be rectified A.S.A.P.

I do plan to post more excerpts, so please keep checking the site.

As it now says on the site, I am working on a better sounding CD of my emotional noodlings on the Novachord. I am a big fan of Morricone, Hermann, Goldsmith and John Barry so I guess It has to come out somewhere. I am saving all of the emails I am getting so you will get a notice when it’s available.

Also, since most sane humans would like to avoid the sheer torture of restoring a Novachord (believe me, I am putting that lightly), I am planning a sample CD. I have a fully functional Analog/Digital studio, so that won’t be a problem. I am sure the sound files can be a testimonial to my capabilities here.

Thanks for the link. I helps to see that people appreciate the sound and the sacrifice. It took me a year of my life, pretty much 24/7 to restore the Novachord. I have not added up the parts bills yet. I will post these results on the website. Some people have asked me - could you do one for me? I really don't know if I could go through that again. Not to be a jerk here, but a year of my life, all the toxics, all the caps, resistors, lead, polishing, wiring, cleaning, sanding etc. - I am afraid I would have to charge 6 figures to even entertain the thought. Sorry, but that is the truth.
So, expect a sample CD!

How wonderful human energies can be, when there is good will and intelligence is used for positive things. This raises my own self-motivation as I feel part of mankind. What a wonderful work of patience, what magnificent sound.
