that's right, I've installed a linux-xp dual boot on a second machine, networked both, got tomcat, building a web site WTF???

both machines are now worth 580 gb of disk space

what's wrong with me

lets hear about you guys, what is it in your mind that intitles you as a certified geek?

I'm now surrounded by six lcd screens: two twin-screen daws, a laptop and an MacMini. Just love these com-puter thingys. Nerds rule the world

six lcds.. you beat me! and yes, i'd also be curious about your use of the mini, do you run music software on it?

The Mini is used regularly only by my 5 year old. I got it only to convert little software programs I make for Mac use. I've poked around wth Garageband, which does work flawlessly, but the Mini is too underpowered for anythign serious...

Mm, I got a Silicon Graphics Indigo2 that's a bit slow (100MHz R4000 MIPS) but works pretty well. It saw some use lately as my main machine died on me and I had to rebuild a new one, so I used the SGI as a spare. It has the most incredible screesaver ever, totally mindblowing.

I also have an OpenBSD box in my closet (it's a bit noisy =P)

I've got a 5lb lump hammer with "Computer Hardware Maintenance Kit" written on it.

Does that make me a nerd?

mmm...

- I remember how to properly align a 5in floppy drive.

- I also have a properly set up firewall.

- I regularly back up my files and store the physical medium at a remote location.

- I stopped counting the number of leds on my equipment when it got passed 100.



Darn! I don't have 6 lcds yet though...

depends on how often you actually use it...

regarding the MacMini: it's in fact not the most powerful box (as CPU, bus and memory specs tell), but it's the most perfect package adressing it's target group I've ever seen in PC business.

Apple's software bundle is a pretty good value for any ambitious home user - contemporary digital lifestyle and the unavoidable patches are automatically applied without a chance to fail - idiot proof - the best camouflaged BSD system around.

It's easy to understand and well organized, people will love it - and yes, for that reason probably sign Apple's additional 'value services' and spent some cash on stylish extras... as mentioned elsewhere

I've recently opened one for a memory upgrade. Another perfectly crafted snap-in case - ridiculuous to compare it with the usual barebone gang's stuff...

Yep, while I don't use the Mini much I certainly didn't hestitate to buy it and am still glad I did. I can make little Mac compatible thingummys which is good -- and there's absolutely no way I would have bought one of the 'big Macs'.

Since this is a nerd thread, how hard is it to switch cases on a full ATX size case ? One of my machine has the ugliest, losest most horrible sharp-edged case ever seen, but the 'guts' inside are very good.

I popped the case and poked aorund a few days ago but it all looked too hard... Anyone done it ? How many hours work ? Any dangers ?

Nerd is about where I've come to...who else has a web-based phone voicemail system for home use only?

Also a HomeTheatrePC with DVD's and the Kids' GameCD's (only the ones we own, of course) imaged on to the hard disks? No removable media loading/unloading here! Everything is networked so you can grab a DVD image from another PC and watch it.

This is all separate from the studio computers, of course

I'm pathetic and would be lost without this crap (which is extremely pathetic)...!

i'm running two boards now and while I was shoving them in the box I started wondering how you guys running the big board get it to fit . In my current box I know I couldn't fit it in ..so...what cases can be used to give you some flexibility on slot choices and if you running a few hard drives then how do you keep them out the way of the BIG board?
Hey spirit I guess it's the power supply cables that are giving you the heebie jeebies ...I just replaced a power supply and it's not hard ..I was gonna get the shop to do it but I know I take more care than they do .sigh.and I saw on a how to site that on a scale of difficulty of one to five that Psu are one ...so i did it myself ...
If you insist on ignoring sods law and the idea that if it aint broke dont fix it then why not take some photos put em on another machine to view and get yourself a static wrist strap [the phone WILL ring while you're juggling expensive components...dont forget you're strapped to your machine
