Recently I was asked to make a remix for a very popular Polish vocalist - Monika Brodka (winner of the third Polish Idol edition, one of two Idol finalists to mnake a career). Though I didn't win the contest I got a permission to show it on my webpage (it's not available there, yet,though). They jury said it's good but didn't meet their requirements to be a dance remix. Perhaps it's a bit too slow but this way it becomes so deep!

For those who don't know the original(I know most of you are): vocals, acoustic guitar and harp sounds are from the original - the rest is mine or made using samples. There is also a sample of the original version (the part processed with a phone like effet).


I have to say one of the most important thing to me that inspired me much and in my opinion is the best bass synth ever is BASSMAN III by Celmo (thanks!!!). I always use it in all my productions - I always experiment with different bass synths or bass sample programs and I alaways end up with Bassman III. The main thing that helped me in the mix was Optimaster and also my long time favourite - Saturn (for its pads).

Overall I like your work here, but found quite an unbalanced mix when starting till 1.20, then, when the big drum comes in, it all feels better.

Her voice is too covered with effects and does not transmit much feelings to me, it sounds cold.

Nestor, your comments are very valuable. Especially on the vocal part. Reminds me that music is not only theory and maths but mostly feelings! Have to pay attention on it

I’m glad my words are a point of departure for you to contrast and help yourself decide what to do with the song. This is what I want to be in the music forum, a useful contribution for composers, and at the same time, being involved in a learning process for my own profit. Nevertheless, I have to say that “every” single time I give a point of view about compositions, remixes or any musical work here made, I can’t help feeling a certain uneasiness when pointing out things I think don’t work too well.

I think it is important to have the freedom to speak about what you like or dislike, always respectfully and explaining what you mean, as it is important to be able to “listen” to what others say, as you did with me, even if you are a much greater professional than me, and with much experience in recording studios too, which I have not.

I am convinced that “other musicians and composers” can discover aspects of my music that I can’t notice by myself, so I need to be open to straight, unsophisticated criticism, this can’t be but a welcomed feature that will help me be a better musician.

I would like deeper, sincere criticism to happen more often. We need to understand that we are together in this growing process as members of a musical community, that there is no destructive intention on critics, or at least, all on the contrary, we find a very positive way of learning about ourselves and our music.

To be able to learn fast and without prejudice about the processes of your creativity, you need to let you ego at the rear of your understanding, so you can hear what others have to say. If somebody feels everything he does is always right, always perfect, there is for sure a problem of some sort, and this is not always a good thing.

I encourage everybody to this growing process, good for us.
