I don't know which one is best now, but look for dual compatibility, DVD+RW & DVD-RW.

Also, i think dual layer dvd are becoming pretty cheap (9gigs instead of 4.7gigs afaik).

I'm pretty pleased with my NEC 3500 which supposedly supports dual-layer although I haven't tried it yet.

Watch out if you want to connect it externally though.

But I don't think this problem is specific to this model.

Just got a Plextor 716A burner. Not sure how it compares to other brands but it is full featured and fast.

The only issue is you're not supposed to push the tray in by hand to close it which I find kind of annoying. I'm used to pushing the tray in by hand to close it. Done it for years on my old TDK burner. The disc drawer on the Plextor seems kind of weak compared to my old TDK unit. But this is just a nitpick.

Yes, go for the Plextor PX-716A or alternative the TDK 1616N it is as good as the Plextor but maybe a bit cheaper.
Based on tests in a magazine of my trust.

Oooops, I am a Guru. Nice feel.

I had a Plextor burner once and it died something like one week out of the 1-year warranty. Generally they are great drives but they're overpriced and occasionally qualitatively not very different from the other drives on the market. The NEC should be about HALF as expensive and just as fast as the Plextor. And who knows - it might last longer too  ...just my two cents.
