It is nice looking and all. You could get same size VIA based PCs for some time though. Their smallest MB with CPU, net, graphics, sound is 11*11cm as far as I remember. Hook a flash card in it as hard drive substitute, and you have a very small and silent mini PC for lighter tasks.

It was leaked yesterday, via eh
www.applethinksecret or something.
So they had to come out with it.
I've read that it is answering the needs of typical iPod users who wanne exchange and work with a (cheap) Apple computer.
I still feel impressed by the iMac g5, the 'monitor computer':

cheers.

oh yes thats what oracle and sun proposed 5 years ago, but...
Oracle and Sun never predicted full blown unix machines at the size of a CD drive - they had something like networked terminals in mind
this is an agressive move by Apple - it's the first time they release a box without their custom video plugs, so it doesn't adress existing customers in the first place.
regarding suggested target groups... let me add that we'll probably use some of those to replace 8-10 office machines for a bargain once we decide to switch to OSX
cheers, Tom

I think that they've just brought out a solid-state iPod too, 'bout the size of a packet of chewing gum:

0.5 or 1 GB sizes available.

My friend Ian 'Scoop' Harris was on telly this afternoon ("Working Lunch") discussing the new minimac as he's the editor of Mac Format (Future Publishing).
Hopefully he had the brains to arrange for it to be recorded...

times are coming that the toys are that small that you have to buy big remote controllers of 10 kilo to tend them...
(wireless of course)

Hoho! You can watch Ian in Real Player format:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/programmes/work ... efault.stm
I downloaded the .ram file (not 100% sure though as it still seemed to be streaming).
Ian's bit starts @ 25:20 into the video, until about 28:40.
Quite how he avoided saying "no, no, shurrup" is beyond comprehension

hey, I wonder how the $500 box poses as a dedicated sound module. It might even work as a dedicated max/msp box. Not too much power at 1.4ghz.. but interesting. Definitely should work as an expensive sample box.

thinking about it, you're actually pretty close to the toy's* purpose by comparing it to that Oracle/Sun strategy...
both companies had their main interest in selling software for application servers - exactly what Apple now execute's with it's external service strategy.
The big Steven's next book will probably be:
how I made a living from you living the i-life
cheers, Tom
* a serious toy btw, and 1.4 ghz is a massive amount of processing power considering what's running on even G3 machines

Maybe CW Frank falls in love with the mini, and decides to create an external FW Scope box to use it with...

lets hope so. anyways this is an example of things to come, the PC world already has those cool little boxes (shuttles?) and now this... eh, creamware knows that their cards are already too big to fit in a growing number of computers cases, lets hope they jump into the firewire/usb/whatever wagon. noah is a good move imo, they have to keep going in that direction or they'll be gone soon

anybody using logic 7 on osx? if so would the mini be able to run it leaving enough power to run a few platinum verbs and virtual synths?
