I'd like to get one. Any suggestions? Used gear outlets? The only requirement is that it has to have pitch control and multiple speeds (for compatibility with some of my old tapes).
I looked on e-bay, it seems that Pioneer RT707 and RT 909 are very popular. Technics too.

The Technics reel to reel was an awesome machine with incredibly low wow and flutter, stunning frequency response, and a very low noise floor.
I don't know if was very versatile in the speed department.

Yeah, Revox or Tascam were the two big names.
Check Ebay. Good luck.
I owned a Dokorder back in high school (mid 70's). Pioneer made a sort of home hi-fi type unit back in the late 70's. I guess you are already finding that stuff on Ebay.

I am a little reluctant to buy from e-bay since there is little or no waranty on items. Here in Chicago, there is a store on Belmont called Saturday Audio Exchange, they have reel to reels from time to time but they are expensive. I know also a little repair shop on Ashland and Montrose, that also sells calibrated units.
I guess, I was kinda trying to find out what models are popular and known to be robust maybe with spare parts still available.
Swiss are also known with the Nagra legend which still sells for around 3000$.
I think the last company that makes reel to reels is Tascam.
What's the best Revox model? (A77,B77,etc)

Revox were the standard in theatres here - doesn't seem all that long ago !
Ones i remember had a cue/autostop function, which involved splicing clear leader tape between your tracks

I don't think you're going to find a warranty on ANY reel decks since they are all used. I think Ebay might be your best bet. Just pay attention to the description and make sure you're dealing with someone with good feedback and you should be ok.
There is also Chicago Audio Repair in Arlington Heights. Just down the street from Guitar Center. They sometimes have stuff like that for sale.
If you do manage to find something decent let me know. Occasionally I get calls from clients who want to restore old tapes. I never know where to send them. If you're interested in making a few bucks on the side.
