Most PCs I've seen have serial ports that are for joysticks or MIDI. Is there any way to access these ports through the SFP? Cubase can detect it, but there seems to be no software I/O for it.

Hi.
Personally I use external thru and merge boxes. I have'nt a great experience, but it seems no way to effectively use signals to/from other boards

I think you somehow use mpu401 through Cubase.
If I remember rightly, a MIDI signal incoming to a Cubase armed track could be present at the Sequencer Midi Out CW module.
As for MIDI out, exept for particolar requirements, the most of the material to send out come from sequencer and, as MIDI signal, don't need any processing, so if Cubase recognize your MPU port... you've just to try.
