Have you tried some other audio editor like Soundforge or Cooledit or Audacity? Does recording in a sequencer give the same results? It might be Wavelab, try recording/messing around in other similar software. If they work well, you'll know it's Wavelab, otherwise the problem is somewhere else in the chain.

HI,
I EVEN TRIED RECORDING WITH THE RECORDER EDITOR THAT COMES WITH WIN XP, SAME RESULT, SO I DON'T think IT'S WAVELAB, AS THERE WAS NO PROBS WITH WIN 98,THIS OCCURS SINCE MOVING FROM WIN 98 SE TO WIN XP, THANKS ANYWAY FOR YOUR FEEDBACK***

try lowering scope priority and raising wavelab priority(to above normal) in the device manager..

my set-up:
Wavelab preferences/Audiocard: set playback & rec to MME-WDM Creamware Play/Rec1;
Buffer nos: Play-13; Rec-6
Buffer size 16384 for both.
Computer- Ctrl Panel/System/hardware/Device Manager....go to your Creamware card (Sound, video & game cntrlrs): properties/settings/wave setup - No of devices & channels set to 2; Output preload - set to about 90%
