you know, I find it astonishing that a dance dj was asked to perform the music...the pro sport scene isn't really the most progressive scene, in my eyes, specially not the top of the sport organisation, consisting of old men in black suits with diplomat cases.
I'm not really a fan of Tiësto, and that he's dutch doesn't bother me, but I like it to see house music on the opening ceremony of the biggest event of the world

I thought the opening was really well done - the opening sequences were stunning. The rest was simple and elegant. And credit to Athens for using a DJ instead of the usual record company warbling top-40 rubbish.

Pesonally I thought the Sydney opening ceremony was crass, commercial garbage. Too much record company warbling rubbish, tired old Aussie "stars" singing forgettable generic lyrics. I was utterly embarassed in 2000 (and living in Sydney).

The flame lighting at Athens could have had an extra twist perhaps, but was better than the too-clever-by-half Sydney version.

But best of all flame-lighting in recent years imho was the flaming arrow at Barcelona...

wow, I missed the opening ceremony, and I'm really surprised to hear Tiesto did it.. I think it's a good change tho. People may like or dislike Tiesto, but I have to admit he's really good at what he does, and also manages to perserve a "Tiesto" signature sound. I wonder who else was on the candidate list.

Mmmm...Kylie!

The D.J. bit was a bit strange I thought...guy was jumping about like he was in the middle of a rave. Perhaps they should have had a beer tent in the middle, getting the athletes mashed-up and dancing about?

Good move to end these marching music tunes. And a dancing DJ? Well, he was concentrated and dancing is good to keep the rhythm. That really was not the easiest job to do. For me: excellent! Easy to listen to, not boring, not dominating, once in a while a climax, congrats.

I saw Tiesto on television yesterday, explaining that he created all the performed music by him self.
Not bad then

@ Micha - I agree, the DJ was good, just that everybody should have been bopping about!

Here is some info:

"Tiësto to perform at the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.

Tiësto, twice voted the #1 DJ in the world by DJ Magazine, will make Olympic history on Friday, August 13, when he becomes the first DJ ever to perform in an Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games.

Some four billion people will be watching the planet's premier sport event, when the 28th Olympiad of the modern era opens in Greece, the land where the Olympics were born, and the City where they were revived 108 years ago.

No DJ has ever performed at the Olympic Games.

The President of the ATHENS 2004 Organizing Committee, Mrs. Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki, heralded the announcement of Tiësto’s participation, saying: “Our Ceremonies will include unique Greek artistic elements along with modern and international perspectives. While it is path-breaking, it is also natural, that a modern artist like Tiësto will contribute to the celebration we’re planning on our opening night. We welcome him to Athens.”

In October 2003, Tiësto was approached by the Athens Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games (ATHOC) for a DJ-performance of 90 minutes during the parade of the athletes, a part of the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games.

During this parade, all participating nations introduce their athletes, over 10,000 in total. ATHOC has shown it values art and innovation by asking the most popular DJ on Earth to produce the music for the parade.

Tiësto will perform his DJ-set live in the Olympic Stadium in Athens. This will include new tracks produced especially for the Opening Ceremony and songs that have been tailored to compliment the spirit of the Ceremony.

In connection with this announcement, Tiësto said, “I am honored to be to be part of the biggest sports event in the world. The fact that the Games are returning to their birthplace and to the city where they were revived makes Athens 2004 very special. The opportunity to perform my music for billions of people around the globe will be the greatest highlight of my life.”

Gotta admit, thats pretty big, as if the guy was not big enough already though hehe.
