Before I lose it completely and dowse my PC in lighter fuel, are there any kind souls out there who are willing to put me out of my misery?

I have a Pulsar II, Scope 4 and Cubase SX 2.0. I don't seem to have any trouble with XTC in SX, this is fairly idiot proof, but I really want to use Cubase as a sequencer alongside Scope (is it me or is there just a tad too much latency usingXTC? In any case I really want to be able to tinker with Modular II so this is out of the question really).

Could someone provide a basic setup: one synth, mixing desk and the necessary ASIO ins and dests, and the required MIDI connections plus any othe settings required, then the necessary device set up in Cubase to make it all tick along nicely.

So far I have tried the supplied ASIO EZ playback.pro and ASIO EZ playback pro.pro setups. While I can get audio playing in cubase and use the sequencer to trigger the synths I can't get Cubase to respond to the MIDI keyboard even though the synth plays fine with hardly any discernable latency (I can't record live playing in SX basically). Should I also be able to hear VST instruments too? I can't seem to get any sound out of these either.

Many thanks in anticipation of any response

you do have to have sequencer midi input and output modules connected in your project (as well as asio) BEFORE you open cubase. also, you do have to select the cw midi option in your midi track in cubase as well and you may have to record enable the track if the midi signal passes through cubase before it gets to your scope synth(because you set it up that way.. actually, there are a few proper ways to connect things).

maybe not related, but important:

*hint* this stuff is virtual reality. signal flow is identical to that of hardware. cubase is a multitrack recorder. the physical connections that are on hardware are the modules in sfp. cubase's audio connections(jacks) are the asio modules. cubase's midi jacks are the sequencer midi source and destination. cubase configures itself with the proper i/o ports when you start it based upon what is in your project window. if you make changes to the asio or sequencer midi modules in the project window after cubase is open, you must restart cubase to properly reset those connections.

i guess giving us a clue how your midi is set up, will get you an answer.
do you connect the midi controller to the pulsar's physical connectors, do you use usb, a dedicated midi device?
tracks in cubase properly armed?

give us some more info on your set up, and someone will get it to work for you...

welcome!

Cheers folks!

My rudimentary setup includes a MIDI keyboard controller connected directly to the Pulsar and I connect the audio outputs from my Pulsar to an external amp.

Hi there,
Have you had a look at the sample projects. To hear MIDI messages from your keyboard via Cubase, you must have the MIDI source connected to sequencer dest, then sequencer source connected to the audio out with some sort of synth in between. Plus the channels settings must be the same (sorry, don't know your experience level). Also you may need to have the MIDI channel in SX in record mode.

I got everything up and running eventually - the section in the manual on recording midi set me on the right course. I also can play and hear VST instruments.

Thanks to everyone for responding!
