My next step has been to check the Maxtor main drive into another PC, it is working fine, so I know the main drive is not the problem...

Problem solved by no reason... really strange.

I removed the Maxtor HD, which is the first, the one with the programs, and put it into another PC, to see if it worked fine, and it did as I already said. Well, then I was getting ready for a mayor hardware problem, in fact, I was expecting a MOBO failure someware... but nothing happend. When I put the HD back, evertyhing was just fine... What the hell is it?

I have thought much about it, but did not find any concrete answer. Nevertheless, I suspect a BIOS exception, a problem in the loading of it... it is the only explanation I can get...

It is scary, cos if you are working well and suddanly you have this problem, well, you know...

If you have any clear idea, please post. Thanks.

Sometimes I've found out that the connection between HD and MoBo is slacked and I don't know why - I didn't move anything!!
And when I re-plug the HD, all is fine ...
But it costs hours of work and some grey hair

So there is still one pro for using parallel ATA - those connections doesn't just go loose.

this is shocking, knowing what you've been through, is the maxtor indeed serial?

I could be remembering wrong. I know Nestor bought a SATA drive (did he have a tough time getting going with that one - and some strange solution (don't remember which))

Anyway, I have never actually connected a SATA drive. I have however (un)plugged PATA drives many times - and I would be surpriced to see such one just fall out.

I FOUND THE PROBLEM! I Will post it in the Tips and Tricks forum, so people know about it.

It is in fact very simple... I got used, lately, to switch the system off through pushing the start bottom for about 4 seconds, and the PC switches off inmediatelly, I thought it was great, cos I could close the system in just 4 seconds when it takes about 1 minute to switch off if done through software. Well... this, if you have a double boot system, as I do, may overwrite the MBR with a small error, but enough for it not starting again... So beware, do not use this way of switching off your computer, unless you are in a real hurry.

Nestor, that is like pulling the plug - something you should only do when the software shutdown fails!

Oh Nestor!!! You must be kicking yourself.

There we go kids. One very good reason to turn your computer off properly.

Hey... I'm actually progressing, I have learned to switch my system off after 6 years of ussage, it's not bad... is it?
