I'm probably going to sound really ignorant here, but can someone please explain to me when you would use a Saw up wave as opposed to Saw down or vice versa? I know what the difference is between the shape of the two, and their obvious roles when it comes to LFO's, but I'm talking about audio oscillators. Both waveshapes sound the same to me.

use both in same time and with a lfo on the fine tuning of one you could have some kind of "pulse width " modulation but with saw .
