Fortunately I had recorded just before, to test it, an MP3 of my song, but it is full of clicks and crackles… Please, forget the clicks and get to the music, there’s nothing I can do about it now. Of course, I put it through a declicker but it is not enough…
Well, now the positive points: I’ve never heard anything of better sounding quality coming from my hands and made in my computer (unfortunately you will not appreciate it here), in this sense I’m quite happy with the results. The mastering was very challenging due to the different levels and ways of playing of the participants, i.e. the different samples included in the project: Chris Werner, John Cooper, Ken Suguro and myself. I fixed this problem with much automation, SX is great for this.
I have also started learning XTC
, an interesting mode, particularly for mastering, it is handy for it cos you can do everything in Cubase without moving much and in a single screen and Creamweare plugins are just superior in sound for some special tasks.
The Pulsar Plugins used were: Final Lisa, Delay S and PT 2028 S Demo. I have to say that Final Lisa did an excellent job it really is quite precise for mastering, it is my first time using it as a mastering tool. The Delay S was used in real time while recording the files to Wavelab, playing with it in some passages to double the rhythm of the drum, it was fun and an excellent effect.
I've never used a Delay for Mastering, it's wild to me... I have tried long ago Paul Tanty’s reverbs, but I realise I did not pay enough attention “WHAT A REVERB” they are fantastic. (Again, I hope you can appreciate it even with all these clicks)
Having worked and so heard the samples of Ken, John and Chris, I have to say they are very different kind of composers. Ken is solid and decided while Chris is volatile and meditative. John has a deeper sense of expression, it is much articulated than Ken and Chris, while being soft at first sight, but firm in conviction. Chris’s drums were fantastic I have to say, very, very well recorded. General: I particularly liked the John’s deep and melancholic bass, two of the rythms drums offered by Chris, and the melodic line of Ken, which is extremely effective and addictive.
When I started, I was quite lost cos so different backgrounds and styles were difficult to match, so it took me about two hours to get a path to walk, then things started to flow naturally, and the form of the song came up. Then I started to amuse myself with some loops created with a mass of carefully selected samples. I’ve never composed out of loops, and had neither composed with other people’s loops, so it was VERY interesting, and fun. I’ve learned so much with this…
As I said, when finishing, just before mastering, I was very happy wiht it all, it sounded extremely well and I quite like the music I came up with, too.
I hope you have some fun listening to this experiment. Sorry for the quality of this MP3 nevertheless.
Thanks to all the participants and I hope you have had so much fun and learning as I did.
Cheers.
