I bought a new house yesterday to get away from the city so I can do music in peace. I got nervous about owning 2 houses on my low income so I decided to sell the old one even though it is a great investment. The profit should be enough to pay for the new house and I was only there for 5 years. The country house is in the mountains. It is brand new. It is one of 2 houses on the dead end street and the other house is not in site. You can not see any houses from anywhere on my property because of the distance and the heavy woods. It has a screened in porch in the back and a nice sized room upstairs for my studio as well as a large master bedroom downstairs and 2 bathrooms. I'm 44 and somewhat nervous. I tried to explain to my mystified girlfriend that I needed to get away from the loud city (and insane annoying roommates). Now I can really do music. I have a nice microphone and pre to try some singing. I need to be alone so I can practice without feeling that self conscious feeling you get when you know someone can hear you.

you mentioned it's in the Appalachians, that's very very old ground, hundreds of million years old - the only place I know from reading is Seneca rocks.
I really do like the mountains very much, but I'm not shure if I would have dared that step - congrats Braincell !

It's a fantastic place Brain. I think that being in a place like this, helps people to get more deeply involved with their own music. I know very well what you mean by neighbours hearing you... it is enoying...

I'm sure that this emptyness will give you much more than what you expected to have.

Does look very nice. I know it's the US, but if that house was in Australia I'd have two little concerns: bugs and bushfires ?

It's in Shenandoah county in the Blue Ridge Mountains. I have never heard of any fires there although I guess that is a possibility. We had sooooooo much rain in 2003. There are fire hydrants on the street. Bears have been a slight problem. As for bugs the back porch is screened so I will be able to enjoy the woods without being eaten.

Bears

Did you hear about that gruesome story a couple of months back where a couple of bear researchers were eaten by bears ?

The attack was accidently filmed when they dropped their video camera... The guy is yelling to his wife to hit the bear with something... then after he's eaten it goes after her and eats her too

But they were fooling around with the bears asd the early video footage shows...

A pilot who flew in to pick them up at a scheduled time just found a few fleshy scraps and the camera.

I dunno, think I'd prefer to have snakes and spiders than bears...

That couple who were killed by bears were really stupid. He used to follow them around and talk babytalk to them. Ironically he was featured on a tv show where he insisted the the bears would never hurt him.

Normally bears are afraid of people. If they have too much contact with people, that is where the danger lies.

If you ever see a bear up close, stand up, do not run away but slowly back up speaking firmly to let the bear know you are not afraid.

That is what the home owners association manual says. I have never heard of a bear attack in the area. I think there are some incidents and many more car break ins in Yellowstone National Park which is in a much different part of the country.

Looks fantastic. My house vibrates every time a bus or lorry goes past. I can see the allure of a little countryside retreat !

By the way 'dead-end street' has the wrong conatations, i think

"Cul-de-Sac" is what my agent called it. That sounds a lot more classy. The house at the end is called "The Far End" after the comic strip. Houses in that area often have cute or stupid names.

cul-de-sac in english is 'ass of the bag', i don't find that particularly classy

Dead-end is the real term to use, in english
