i have just installed winXP, with 3 CW cards.
initially i installed the default "ACPI uniprocessor PC" but later i was told that the "standard PC" is better, so i changed the drivers under the "hardware" section of winXP to PC standard.
but there is a problem: now the PC after the shutdown don't turn off automatically anymore and i have to press the power button. very annoying...
nevertheless, if i choose the "ACPI uniprocessor PC" my CW cards are assigned to the IRQ 20, 22,23...
will this be a problem??
i have a asus p4b533 with P4 2.4GHz

Only if the initial install was set to be Standard PC, I find the APM tab page on 'Power Options Properties'. Enable APM (Advanced Power Management) and the machine will shutdown fully from itself. I found there's no such APM page when an ACPI machine is later changed to Standard PC.

Apparently there's still a hole in my theory since my Standard PC machine shuts down fully most of the time, but often I have to keep the power button pressed for a while to manually shut it down...

[Edit] Cheers, Andre & Weirdo, for capping off the hole in my theory :>

I too was told that standard PC mode was better. I tried it and also found the annoying problem with shutting down. I've gone back to using ACPI and I have no problems with it. By the way, I also have 3 cards installed. I wish I could remember or find the link which explained the problem, when I do I will post it, but basically from memory, ACPI is by far better with XP and there are loads of reasons why which I cant't remember anymore.

thanks!
for now i'm back to the ACPI mode and i'm digging internet about how to optimize XP for audio.
i have already did a lot of improvements, but the more i search, the more i find!

but the final test will be on a serious sonar project with asio set to 4ms (even though 7ms would be nice for me!)

You can have Standard PC and still get the APM back, I have this working on a my machine right now..

I sent to Atomic how to do it, but I have lost that email, if he still has it and wants to share it he can..

and you can reinstall XP pro over top an existing ACPI install as an upgrade and be able to change it to Standard PC.. it's like installing it fresh, but all your programs will still work.. it just takes it back to the first install state IE no updates will be left installed.
You will have to update to where you were before..

I have used this method now 4 times when something went funky with my machine..saved me tonns of time
