I have been given the oppertunity to make the music for an upcoming javagame for mobilephones.
To start with, I have to create three ringtones that captures the atmospheare of the game. So far so good.
I was wondering if some of you have any experience with suitable software for making midifiles and audio into RMF-files and other mobilephone audio standards?
So far, the most advanced software I have found is "Beatnik Editor", but I find it hard to believe that they are the only ones on the market. So please, any input would be valuble.

Don't the phones support SMF files? I was told I can load a new ring tone just surfing with the browser to any midifile in the web, and it'll work

(Of course taking into account the limitations with instruments etc in the phone)

Does anyone on here have any experience with this kind of work?

I made a ringtone for a friend who was thinking about starting a ringtone company. All you need is a sequencer and a synthesizer that supports general midi. Phones use the general midi standard.
There are virtual GM synthesizers. I think Yamaha makes one. I wouldn't spend much because in the future ringtones will be audio files. This is already starting to happen.

OK - thanks for the input!
I think I've got it figured out now. Most mobile phones support some sort of midi. One of the most common si called SP-Midi, which stands for Scalable Polyphonic Midi. So yes you need a sequencer and a program to put in the SP-data (which is actually sys-ex, so it can be done in a sequencer like Cubase, but a dedicated SP-midi program is easier) Nokia makes one called "Nokia Suite".
The sounds you have available is standard GM, and on newer phones you have the oppotunity to upload a customized soundbank alongside the midifile. There are different formats like RMF (Rich Music Format) by Beatnik) and I believe XMF, which I don't know much about.
Just wanted to fill you in.....

Sounds like fun, just remember that phones very quickly will abandon midi in favor of audio. Does anyone remember the cheesey FM sounds of early games?
