the fan in my A16 has died a noisy death.

does anyone know what the specs would be for a replacement fan?

creamware has been no help with specs. they simply suggest i go to an electronics store, buy a fan and stick it in there. so i went to radio shack and bought a 40mm fan that appears to be the same as the one in there.

my electronics skills are so rudimentary that i didn't feel comfortable taking the insides apart to replace the fan. so i have just stuck a fan on the outside of the case for now. problem is, it is EXTREMELY noisy. i must find a better solution. the fan i bought sure looks the same as the one inside, but i don't ever recall hearing the original fan.

i suspect that i may have bought a fan that is moving way more air than neccessary, that's why it is so noisy. i am of course deathly afraid that if i don't move sufficient air that i will permanently damage my A16, which i certainly can't afford to replace!

any info would help.

You might have to open your A16, in order to get out the old fan and then check the specs on it like powerconsumption. It shouldn't be too complicated.

ps. I have only broken one motherboard in my time as an amateur technician. I had just recieved my new 512 MB Ram block, and then insisted on installing it as fast as I could, not even bothering to move the PC-case from the floor to a nice worktable with decent light. No, it was much faster to ly down on the floor and ram in the ram the oppesit direction of what it was supposed to. It was a resistant little bucker, but I got it in there and turned on the machine - The next day I bought myself a shiny new Abit motherboard with a VIA KT-133 chipset - DOH!

oh i opened the case up. they have simply jammed the fan between the side of the case and the board. it's not actually mounted to anything. however there is a little flange at the top edge of the side that prevents you from just pulling it stright up to remove it. so you have to take the main board out to get the fan out. to remove the main board you have to desolder the bnc word clock connectors from the board. the only info on the fan is that it is 12 volts, which creamware also told me.

Yeah allright I see you problem. Perhaps you should start with finding a fan that gives about the same amount of noise, and then dig deep into your A16....

Good luck

 so I'm not the only one who's able to perform that trick

on topic:
I don't have an A16, so I can't be very precise, but generally you can mount the fan away from the unit, if there's some hole in the case where the air can be sucked out.
Think of it as if you wanted to connect a micro vacuum cleaner. A fairly large fan, fed by a 6 V (doesn't matter) wallwart does the job with almost no noise.
Feel free to pmail me for details, it's one of my favourite subjects
