STOP: there is a better version of this song (more saturation and compressing), it's here!

edit: see last post of 14-11-03 in this thread, I u/ld a new mix with enhanced trumpet edits!

I wasn't really happy with my song Hop da Hips, and the small respons here told me I wasn't the only one

So I changed almost everything except the mainbeat, the Virus filter part, one voicesample and the basline.
I added a second bassline, took a muted trumpet sample and changed the slices to a new melody, and did lotsa other parts.

Now I feel much more comfortable with it, hope you will feel the same.

This is so cool in every respect. A style I laways refer to as 3 a.m music - chilling out after a good night out.
Seriously superb

Bass is as smooth as silk - really a pleasure to listen to this arrangement. Love the muted trumpet sound too - the riff is smart. This will go in my car for those trips home from work in the early hours.
Thanks for sharing it.

sorry to bump this, I changed some important things.
The trumpet melody wasn't strong enough to carry the whole song without special edits, which I did.
Also I changed the mix, it's dryer now, and more open, the sharp-when filter-open trumpet is flattened in the high's.
Think it's better now, just for the record.

I´ll download the new version when I´am back on my PC.
Bedankt.

cool track. definitely a good chillout tune. was just wondering about the robotic voice tho.. kinda gritty compared to the rest. Good contrast if you take it positively, but sort of ruins the mood if you take it negatively.

You may have a point here Ken.
I stretched the original sample, what made it a little creepy.
I need a girl's voice for this I guess

Absolutely GREAT track!
Maybe a bit too "digital" sounding. I would stick in a Vintage Warmer kind of effect, if you have it.

More please

thanks Paul.
in the mastering a PSP vintage warmer was involved, but somehow I have the same feeling Paul.
It's very clean now, too much may be.
I'll check the mastering when I'm home again later.
I used the same settings of the former version of the song, without checking them (it was late already  ), maybe I overlooked something.
I always can throw in a bitcrusher

I meant the PSP Mix Saturator Paul.
But emulated tape saturation means vintage warming.
Wasn't it?

May be I should try another type of saturation and see if temperature is getting warmer then.
Or use the Vintage Warmer as an overall latest effect, tho I don't trust that two times thing so much.
cheerz.

I loved the original, but this is even better.
It sounds more complete, more as if you're happy with it.
The improvisations sound even better as if you felt every note.
Superb track

thanks Neil, you listened very well I guess, because indeed I carefully edited the volume during the 'hanging trumpet note'.
It had to be soft enough in the mix.
After the first mastering I wasn't satisfied with the result, due to the compressing and stuff, the trumpet got too loud.
So I did a new mix with better volume controll, monitoring through streight overall compressing.
Having read your words, I'm glad I did

Also, now I'm here, I took a close look to the 'digital sound' Paul was speaking of.
I dived deep into the PSP Mixpressor and the Tape Saturator, which in fact I used already in the mix which is here.

I thought the result is interesting for those who wanne know what you can do specially with tape saturation.
I think it's much better now, from mastering point of view.
I drived both effects to the (musical) max, so you have to compensate for the higher compression level in the new mix, it's louder
But as I see it, you can hear very well the difference, specially in the lows.
I liked it alot.
Gonne post it now

thanks Sam, nice to be compared with them  but that's far beyond reality, haha.
It's a 'friendly' thingy this song but it's nothing experi-mentally or renewing.
But I take the record Image
Note: you better could have listened to the updated version which is here! (I made a mess of it I guess).

He Chris, these are singing resigned nuns? Image
What's coming out of their mouthes, did they just finish a blowj*b or what?
Thanks anyway

Hm, about the song, I was thinking: a friend of mine felt some trouble with the 'hanging' trumpet note, coming out of the blue as he sees it.
Nestor (was it?) had about the same feeling, so maybe this is a true weakness in style.
At least I would rather delete the trumpet riff than the hanging note, cause I love the rithmic changing patterns it makes.
I must say to my defense Image that I put some fill notes in the hanging trumpet cadanse, specially in the first two bars, in order to overbridge between the trumpet riff and the repeated note.
So you shouldn't really notice the change, at least it should feel natural, but may be that doesn't.
BTW, for me the real joy in this song is not in the trumpet but in the Virus, doing the filtering stuff all the time Image

Making music sometimes can be dancing on a cord, you have to put unexpected changes in a song to keep it interesting, and at the same time it should be 'natural' or 'logic', (even in an experimental setting).
It's a thin line between both requests.
I tried hard to filter the melody line of the trumpet, but the sound of it was already very narrow and very resonant of it's own, too hard to filter, so I could not really alienate it from 'live playing'.
I chopped the original line in slices in Phatmatic Pro, the loop slice editor of Bitshift Audio, so I made the two riffs a bit by myself, but I made them too realistic I'm afraid.

This 'conflict', the ratio between 'realistic' music versus abstract electronic music, is also the reason I decided my next song will be different from my last series.
It's getting too slow and tasty a bit
I commandd myself to make something more alienated, just to keep the balance
I will upload it soon, that's to say ehh one week, or two..., I'm on 3/4th I think.

I love the Phatmatic, I use it these days as my sampler, not alone for loops but for every possible sound that needs special editing and slicing.
For instance, the beat in this song is build from 3 loops, a mainloop and 2 'live' reggea loops.
From the mainloop I just used the bass and snare, and the other two gave me the hihats and some snare fills.
It's sooo handy you can slice a loop and you then change the ridm and use what you need from it, all in midi!
The new Phat version also offers metric slicing, following the logical partitions of the bar.
Perfect to do some tricks with ambient or non rhitmic soundscapes, you can filter the slices independently.
The new (coming?) version of Native Instruments' Kontakt sampler is able to slice too, I'll have to check this one day, but the GUI of the Phat is much better in handling than the Kontakt.
Recommended, the Phatmatic!
Thanks for reading my thoughts
