Hi all! I've read a lot about SFP Card compatibility with new Mac G5 but I can't state for shure "Yes, I've understood".
Owners are hungry due to the presence of only 1 Pci 5volts slot that's SFP compatible (isn't he ).
The question is: for all the users that owns a single SFP card, is MAC G5 a possible, future choice?
I'm actually working on PC but due to the fantastic ( marketing) promises on G5 i'll try the migration to G5.
Am I wasting my money and my time?
Please Answer sincerely and objectively!!!
Thks a lot in advance for your kind attention and patience!!

The PCI slot on the new G5s is 3.3V compatible, I'm afraid... Even if it was 5V then you wouldn't use it due to the fact G5s are only OS X - there is no OSX version of SFP, yet

Thks, now it's clear.
So the nightmare-question that you or someone as prepared as you could know is : is Creamware going to develop this OSx Version for SFP cards ( that I personally payed almost 1.500 Euros!!!! ) ?
Don't kill a dream!

SFP will have an OSX version, but the cards themselves will either have to sit in a G4, or some form of breakout chassis; i doubt any new SCOPE/Pulsar cards will be developed for a while and certainly PCI-X hasn't been established as the 'standard' yet so Apple may do a u-turn like they did on OSX-only machines (they're now dual bootable).

yes, there are a lot of variables to be sorted out.currently, afaik, the best mac setup is an older g4(450mhz or so)with a sonnet products or giga designs 1.25ghz cpu upgrade.

My G4 500MHz should be getting a Powerlogix upgrade soon. Does anyone have any good stories about dual processors - they always seem to cause problems? i may just stick to a single proc upgrade.

I don't know much about dual cpu upgrade cards but you can just check there at
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com - there are upgrade cards user reviews. Your interest is if the upgrade cards are working good with CW cards - I use a Sonnet single 800MHz card and there are NO issues. No means no (like the name of the group) and it's true. The system and other apps are fooled and behave just like in a plain G4/800.

Useful article re. Mac Processor upgrades. Needs Sound on Sound subscription to view though, unfortunately:
