I don´t know what is the cause of it, I´ve tryed everything, I´ve cheked for every posible thing, there are no viruses or similar in my system, no problems with the net, no problems with the modem, nor with the server... I´ve dong the "ping" testing and everything seems to be alright... quite unusual.

I just am wandering if there is sort of a free software you trust that could chek the behariour of your connection.

What you do sugget to do?

What is your problem exactly Nestor? It may be a classic: When people get a 512kb line, they wonder, why they only download with like 50kB. Downloads are usually measured in Bytes, whereas connections are usually measured in bits. That makes a 512kb line a 64kB line, and on top of that, you often losse around 20% speed, if you are too far away from the "big box" at your ISP.

check here, they have speed tests and also system checkers which will tell you how your system is configured and how to tweak it for better performance.
Good luck

Great help you guys, I´m going to try them out...

I have an ADSL 256, and it used to run extremely well, suddanly this problem started and there is nothing evident to be seen or pointed. The company came to my place, did a chek and did not understand it either... I´ll keep you informed about the outcome... Cheers.

I don´t still know... I just am happy to be able to use the internet without problems... I've past quite a few days frustrated looking for what the hell was it, but could not find a sinlge reason... Professionals came to my plase, had a go with the system, and found nothing... they can but just say: sorry, we don't know what it can be.

Well, they did very well anyway, cos they spend more than two hours trying differnet solutions... Finally, they conected my ADSL in a different way, it would work better, but not perfectly, so I went back to Opera, and Opera did not deceave me, I'm glad I've got to know this broser...

from what I know, ADSL can suffer from electromagnetic noise. (just like the old analog modems) So, it could be that the source of noise is in your house, or perhaps somewhere between your house and nearest phone station (where the phone lines adjoin, and where your ADSL signal is sent) Also, the farthest you can be from a phone station is 1.5km. Or atleast that's how it works in Japan.

Or maybe some other company started a very cheap service, and the internet population in Chile increased by 10 times. Hence a drop of speed from internet congestion.

Or what if your musical skills went so far beyond what is possible in the audio range, that it started emitting electromagnetic waves? And did I mension that nearby UFOs can also generate electromagnetic noise? LOL :lol

so what's your speed like right now? Okay, all but the first guess are total jokes.

Nice Ken! I think there can be something like that... I'm going to change places with the modem... The problem is not the continous speed, but the fact that intermitently becomes unstable, like going up and down. That can be in a couple of minutes, or it can come after 10 hours... you can't predict.

My workspace it's not as big as it should, so perhaps for the modem, to have so many electromagnetic things nearby is not very good causing interference.

The problem is exclusively related to surfing, but not to downloading. My download reate is higher than specified by the company by about 5%, which is fantastic.
