Working in SFP & tripleDAT....

Would like to come up with a solution for generating a simple click track. The click could be anything from a simple "tick" to a snare hit or, well... anything that could be used as a timing reference.

My first thought was to take the MIDI output from the tripleDAT module and run that into the sample player which has been set up with a snare hit sample. Run that back into a mixer channel. Any thoughts, suggestions or alternate ideas?

I don't know what sequencer you use, but for SX I would do the following:

Import a one shot hit of the snare or sound you wish to use. Set the desired bpm. Make aliases or duplicates and place one wherever you need a click (on every beat of a 4/4 signature, or whatever you prefer). Quantize the events so that they are in time. Since it's all audio, it will be tight.

there must be a way to do it in mod2/3, but i'm not clever enough yet.

It's not so much about cleverness, more about doing it the quick and dirty way. It can still be done with midi by triggering the STS sampler.

there is also a metronome device here on the planetz device pages..

But that metronome has many different sounds comming random out of it. It is not a steady and reliable click.

Actually, I should rephrase my original message. I'm less interested in ticks and more interested in other sounds.

Many of the musicians that come through my studio hate those annoying ticks. They are hard to focus in on for one thing and don't sound natural. A snare hit is a more natural sounding timekeeper.

On my setup (PC, Pulsar 3.0, Cubase VST32/5.1) I use my outboard JV1080 for the click trax instead of the internal Cubase sound. I'm not at my music pc at the moment but I seem to remember that it is simply a menu choice on the metronome screen - it has to be easy for me to find it

hihats are great. if you can get the drummer do his hihats part over a tape of the song, then cut it and loop it. that'd become a good click

i like to use a tambourine or shaker in the sts device sometimes and the metronome device works very well on my computer.
