Whats your opinion on the best encoder for mp3's or oggvorbis-file formats?

I used to convert my songs from wav to mp3 using Nero's Wave-editor, but I can no longer encode mp3's there (you only get 30 mp3-conversions or something), and that was a real good mp3-encoder I think..

What do you recommend for getting best results with mp3/ogg?

I don't know which one is best, but I use CDex which uses the LAME-encoder and it is free.

You can find it here:

More info on the LAME-encoder:

Cheers!

To my ears, Ogg Vorbis sounds a LOT better with same bitrate. Problem is, that fewer people are able to listen to oggs... older player programs doesn't recognise it without a plugin
But if you know your audience, I'd prefer ogg.

I'll second that. Mp3 and Ogg is just 2 different realms.
